I've done the international from a US cell. Actually international and to a ship in Greece, if that makes a difference. But it was a long time ago and I don't remember much more than it was fantastically expensive and maybe not the best interpersonal idea I have ever had.

I've called Canada....which doesn't require extra numbers, but does COST extra...
Also, as far as I can tell, there's no way to call an international number using a US cellphone.
I could call Jamaica and the UK and I think Russia and Kenya--but certainly the first two--from my Cingular phone.
And you can get a SIM card with a contract (that's what I intend to do--buy an unlocked phone and just sign up with T-Mobile and get their SIM).
You can totally call international from a US cell. The only trick is to use the plus sign with the country code and then the number. So a UK number would be +44 873 4752 or something. (In the UK and Ireland you have to drop the 0 at the beginning of numbers, I don't know if that's true for Greece.)
ita, I thought you might be able to get a SIM with a contract, but I thought you were asking about pay as you go's.
I thought you were asking about pay as you go's.
I was. Raq didn't think you could get a SIM in the US, though, and I wanted to correct that.
Sorry to interrupt the cell phone talk, but I just wanted to post that according to Jim "If the Apocalypse Comes, Beep Me" Aug 14, 2005 11:53:06 pm PDT , today is Clara's birthday.
Happy second birthday, big girl! I hope you're all healthy now, too. And, of course, happy day to Fiona and your big brother and all your family.
Thank you, Nilly! She had a lovely (though very wet) birthday. I posted some pictures in Natter.
Beautiful children, Fiona! I added you as a contact. I'm leszlaw on Flickr. And Happy Two to Clara!
I wonder if Aimee's seen that.
