Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve. - John Prine

The newlyweds come up for air.

I think I've seen less of the missus in the last month than in any time since we met. She's been on the road; I've been working OT.

Still swamped here, but the database I need is down so I'll give a quick update. Bought the Dylan Mojo w/ the covers CD, Uncut with the Highway 61 Revisited Revisited tribute CD and 100 rock icons on 100 pop culture icons (Uncut's list, their comments), and Jazz Times "50 LPs from 35 Years of JazzTimes" issue. No CD with the last one.

Not sure if the Mojo CD is really better than the Uncut one or if the latter just seems lamer because the original is so damned good. Nothing on either one knocked me out, but I haven't listened to them enough to get past the initial "it doesn't measure up" reaction. Fun stuff in each mag, though, so I take the CDs for what they are: bonuses.

David, Annie Ross was on Fresh Air last Friday (I think.) I'd link to it but am having trouble getting into the site. Thought you might be interested.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

It took me a while to get used to saying "wife," but, like Joe, I deeply prefer it to "partner," which, with my accent, sounds like she ought to be played by Jack Elam.

Wait, so do you look more like Woody Strode or the Italian guy? I'm just trying the get the visual right.

I'd like to say Woody Strode, but unfortunately I look more like Strother Martin. (And I mix my movie metaphors.)

I need to get this. Did y'all see the NYTimes story about the Dylan stuff coming out this week. I didn't know the Scorsese documentary was going to be on American Masters (airing Sept. 26 and 27 on PBS). I've been looking forward to it but I'm glad I don't have to go buy it.

I can't think of anything funnier than Search for Bach for a thread name.

Oh and I dated a guy for 11 years and as weird as it was saying "boyfriend" as a 27 year old who had lived with the same guy for 8 years, I NEVER used "partner." Not a fan of that term.

erikaj/Other Homicide fans - hope you are still reading this thread. I talked to Andre Brauer briefly at the Shedd Aquarium (in Chicago) this weekend. I was watching the otters and moved out of the way for his child/grandchild/friend's child (?) and we talked about how cute they were (otters and children). He has grey hair now and looks even more distinguished than usual.

Cool! Thanks - yeah, I'm a fan of Annie. Also she's had a really interestiong life.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

I wonder if Combustible Edison has officially disbanded?

Effectively, they have. Michael's been living in L.A. for a few years now. Last I heard from him, he had a couple of band projects going on, and none of them were Combustible Edison.

I'm up to season three of Homicide. It's not as good as The Wire, but not much is.

I have to confess, I've never seen it (my mom loves it though). I recognized him from various TV things and his great role in the horrible movie, Duets.

I didn't want to be all "you're a movie star!!" while he was with his family, but if I had, I would have told him he sings a beautiful version of "Freebird."

He's a bad-ass actor. I'm surprised he hasn't been in more things.

By your aesthetic criteria (not just your gut favorites) what makes your Best List, Corwood?

The Wire
The Office
