Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan
There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.
They're part of the whole neoLounge thing, though for reasons which are somewhat beyond my reckoning they've survived the entire collapse of the neoLounge thing.
Their first album came out in 1997, right at the start of the neo-lounge trend. The latest album came out last year, two years after the trend has collapsed and left other bands standing on street corners holding out their martini glasses and saying to passers-by "Spare vermouth?"
In essence, they have zero competition now, so they instantly go to the front of the pack.

Well, there are still roughly a berjillion trip hop/electronica collections of bossa nova with a contemporary beat I know this because I bought one recently after JZ heard it at the circus. So I think that kind of music is still out there, but it's being marketed differently. I wonder if Combustible Edison has officially disbanded?
It took me a while to get used to saying "wife," but, like Joe, I deeply prefer it to "partner," which, with my accent, sounds like she ought to be played by Jack Elam.
And I love The Search For Bach.
Now, despite my ambivalence about Westerns, I think I might have to marry a man that wanted a true"pardnah"(Dude, I suck at dialect...note to self)
As much as I want an SO, they might be best served by waiting for my Simonverse thing to chill a bit, unless he wants to be my "sworn bunky".
I'm kidding. Swear.
The cutest thing at my friend H's wedding reception was him saying "Excuse me, I have to go find my *WIIIFE*." Especially since his mostly-gone southern accent reasserted itself more and more over the course of the sentence. Nine years and two kids later for them, and I can still see his big goofy smile.
It was Dorothy L. Sayers who noted that the word "husband" was "composed of a grumble and a thump," but then again, she married a man whose main accomplishment in life seems to have been that he made a good omelet.
Also, go us for the least painful thread naming discussion ever!
Also also, on topic, what should I listen to by Of Montreal?

P-Cow should have a recommendation.
The newlyweds come up for air.
I think I've seen less of the missus in the last month than in any time since we met. She's been on the road; I've been working OT.
Still swamped here, but the database I need is down so I'll give a quick update. Bought the Dylan Mojo w/ the covers CD, Uncut with the Highway 61 Revisited Revisited tribute CD and 100 rock icons on 100 pop culture icons (Uncut's list, their comments), and Jazz Times "50 LPs from 35 Years of JazzTimes" issue. No CD with the last one.
Not sure if the Mojo CD is really better than the Uncut one or if the latter just seems lamer because the original is so damned good. Nothing on either one knocked me out, but I haven't listened to them enough to get past the initial "it doesn't measure up" reaction. Fun stuff in each mag, though, so I take the CDs for what they are: bonuses.
David, Annie Ross was on Fresh Air last Friday (I think.) I'd link to it but am having trouble getting into the site. Thought you might be interested.

Wait, so do you look more like Woody Strode or the Italian guy? I'm just trying the get the visual right.

I'd like to say Woody Strode, but unfortunately I look more like Strother Martin. (And I mix my movie metaphors.)

I need to get this. Did y'all see the NYTimes story about the Dylan stuff coming out this week. I didn't know the Scorsese documentary was going to be on American Masters (airing Sept. 26 and 27 on PBS). I've been looking forward to it but I'm glad I don't have to go buy it.
I can't think of anything funnier than Search for Bach for a thread name.
Oh and I dated a guy for 11 years and as weird as it was saying "boyfriend" as a 27 year old who had lived with the same guy for 8 years, I NEVER used "partner." Not a fan of that term.
erikaj/Other Homicide fans - hope you are still reading this thread. I talked to Andre Brauer briefly at the Shedd Aquarium (in Chicago) this weekend. I was watching the otters and moved out of the way for his child/grandchild/friend's child (?) and we talked about how cute they were (otters and children). He has grey hair now and looks even more distinguished than usual.
