I just read the (brilliant) lyrics.
Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan
There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.
And "That Lucky Old Sun" is pretty much perfect, even with the JAck Halloran singers.
I was about to say the same thing. Makes me well up just about every time.
hayden, thanks for all the alt-country recommendations you gave me a while back. I've been slowly working my way through them; most recent purchase was the Mekons' "Fear and Whiskey," which is really wonderful. I love Neko Case, too.
My pleasure! Especially if you're enjoying them.
most recent purchase was the Mekons' "Fear and Whiskey," which is really wonderful.
"I was out late the other night / fear and whiskey kept me going / and I dreamed that someone held me tight / but today there's just no way of knowing...."
I never get tired of that lyric.
sara just earwormed me with There's a tear in my beer and it seemed appropriate to share.
I never get tired of that lyric.
It's like the drunken, unpretentious version of that Smiths song: "Last night I dreamt / that somebody loved me / no hope, no harm / just another false alarm".
Fear and whisky do keep me going.
I'm just sayin.
For Jilli, a description of one of the tracks from the latest Divine Comedy record:
And then there's "The Happy Goth", the album's landmark achievement. A surefire new entry to any fan's list of favorite DC songs of all time, "Goth" wraps a hilarious and note-perfect lyric around the bounciest melody Hannon's written this side of "National Express". But it's his rhyming of "cloth" with the ice planet of "Hoth" from the Star Wars movies (which also doubles as metaphor for the color of his subject's skin) that elevates the song to the stuff of, yes, genius.
This made me happy: [link]
