A surefire new entry to any fan's list of favorite DC songs of all time, "Goth" wraps a hilarious and note-perfect lyric around the bounciest melody Hannon's written this side of "National Express". But it's his rhyming of "cloth" with the ice planet of "Hoth" from the Star Wars movies (which also doubles as metaphor for the color of his subject's skin) that elevates the song to the stuff of, yes, genius.

Sounds like it is worth reading. And I was shocked that the reviewer (Joe Klein) actually had positive things to say about Jay Farrar. Well, one positive thing.

So I finally picked up some new music today. Felt like it had been forever since I went CD shopping. I got Calexico's Hot Rail because it seemed summer-appropriate. I only know them through one live show (amazingly well-rehearsed) and a spattering of songs on mixes from folks. So far, I like it.

The music store guy begged me to listen to Devendra Banhart's album Rejoicing in the Hands.

I liked it in the store enough to get it. I am of to AMG him and figure out who the hell he is.

Somehow, I will find it my heart to forgive you, Hec. I am so excited for so many new mixes (and I was coveting your wedding mixes - so thanks mucho for throwing them in as well.)

Devendra Banhart seems to be from your neck of the woods (SF). It's good. A mix of standard old folkie with some songs going for the sweeping western epic thing and others 40s jazz-y. One is in Spanish. Some let's-hope-it-grows-on-me vocal eclecticisms are my only complaint. AMG describes him as "quirky and low-fi" which I would agree with. But it' s not funny quirky so much as "art student" quirky. But mostly smart art student quirky. Not annoying pretentious art student quirky.
