Fratcoustic?
Mmmm, Fratcoustic StrumDudes. I think we're getting close.
I enjoyoyoy, being a boyoyoy, in love with youououou, yeaheah...
I feel like Jon is personally serenading me here.
There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

Ben Harper grew up in Claremont, where his dad owns a musical instrument store-- mostly foreign and unusual stuff.
tina -- I can't believe you're not demanding that Hec FedEx my mix to you, stat.
I'm still fully digesting your AWESOME 2003 mix, Jon. Otherwise - I'd have gotten all ASSCAP on Hec.
In defense of the Fratcoustic Strum Dudes:
When I was in college I saw A LOT of Dave Matthews and Ben Harper shows before they took off all crazy like (well, Ben never got the kind of airplay that DM did - but he does have a fanatic following). They were great shows and great performers when they first started - period. I think they both ventured off into lameville. (Harper's got all spooky religious as well). But then again, my taste in music changed a lot as well.
I can still enjoy my favorites from both of them every once in a while.
Tina's fave DM album - Live at Luthor College
And favorite BH album - Fight for Your Mind
I just felt the need to state my previous devotion to both. I have never listened to John Mayer.

Listening to Harper talk about instruments is pretty darn amazing, actually. I saw him interviewed by David Byrne on West 54th and Byrne was just in awe of his collection and range of knowledge.
Is that an official sub-genre yet? Does it have a name?
Whiny Sensitive Boys.
John Mayer chaps my hide for no good reason. I think it's his voice: dude, what's with all the breathy?
I used to like Dave Matthews until a local "adult alternative" station started playing way too much of him. Acoustic! Live! Solo! All Dave, All the Time! And it started to all sound the same to me.
Whiny Sensitive Boys.
Well, by this classification I can see why you'd include Elliot and Jeff. Though there's a lot of indiepop that would qualify, that has nothing to do with the Fratcoustics.
And Whiny Sensitive Boys also starts to include lots of the emo bands as well.
Perhaps WSB is the uber-genre under which the Strum Dudes and emo bands fall?
There is no emo girl band that I know of. Is there the possibility of one? People expect girls to be emo already so I think they can't qualify....hmmm.

I was just thinking that The Indigo Girls are proto-StrumDudes.
I love my guitar guys, some more than others, but I loves them.
The Indigo Girls are proto-StrumDudes.
Interesting. But they certainly don't qualify as emo and they can't go under WSB so that as the main genre under which Strum Dudes falls is out.
The more I think of it the whole definition of emo revolves around it being from a guy's perspective.
Also - the early fan following of BH and DMB came out of the neo-Deadhead and Phish crowd. The jam-band angle has to be taken into consideration in classification.
