I'd say up to season seven, personally. But then you get stuck with a crap cliffhanger. Although I'm not sure if it ever gets much better after the post-S5 movie.

I wouldn't say auto-genuine, but it is always nice to know someone is paying attention to someone other than themselves. For me, this is true for anyone, male, female, romantic interest or otherwise.

But I'll take my confusion as a point to clarify: When you're walking through a door, you hold the door open for the person behind you, whatever... great.
But when you get in a situation like opening the car door for someone... which necessitates jumping out of your side of the car and jogging around or running up to the car and opening it... it seems to me we're regressing. Where's the self-independence and the advances of the femininist movement over past decades? It's all powdered wigs and carriages, suddenly. What up.
And I complain because I've seen this attitude before in a much smarmier way than SMG was putting it. I.E. the "I expect people to open doors for me" mentality. Yes, and I expect you to have arms.

The number of times I've had to either deal with feeling like I'm holding up the door-opener, or sprint to make sure I don't, I don't see an automatic upside.
If they're near and I'm going to have difficulty with the door -- much appreciated. As is checking to make sure the timing of not holding it open for me doesn't mean it's shutting right in my face.
