Voting Discussion: We're Screwing In Light Bulbs AIFG!
We open it up, we talks the talk, we votes, we shuts it down. This thread is to free up Bureaucracy for daily details as we hammer out the Big Issues towards a vote. Open only when a proposal has been made and seconded according to Buffista policy (Which we voted on!). If this thread is closed, hie thee to Bureaucracy instead!
When there is already at least one board with a very wide range of single-show threads, and a larger pool of posters, would anybody sincerely want to replicate that here? And if so, why?
First, I don't want to replicate this. As I said earlier, I get that my views on single-show threads for the big obsessive love shows are not going to happen. I was just trying to express that I wish I had a way to talk about TV with you guys. I don't want another board. I don't want to subscribe somewhere else.
I am not going to get to talk TV here because I don't want to be spoiled and can't keep up. Fine. But please don't suggest I go away to do so.
I know that was may not be the intention, but that's how this conversation feels to me right now.
I'm coming around to the conclusion that moving SPN off on its own would be treating a symptom of some larger issue,
The larger issue, as I see it, is that if there is one show that consistently dominates discussion within a thread -- a thread that also generates good discussions on other shows -- then that dominating show should be spun off into its own thread in order to allow the other discussions to flourish.
and in the process would alienate some (if not most) of the people invested with discussing it
I currently feel alienated sometimes in BS. Is my alienation any less valid? (I'm speaking rhetorically, Frank. I know you didn't mean it that way.)
Except for feeling shooed away, I'm with KristinT. I think dedicated threads for big-love shows are good. But I know we don't do things that way 'round these parts.
But please don't suggest I go away.
I'm still confused. Who suggested anyone leave?
Even if there were encouragement to get your fix anywhere, that's not inherently the same thing as going away from here.
As noted above, there are Buffistas who frequent other sites for other things. I am not, and will never be, board monogamous.
If you want your show thread model and you want it specifically here, that's your choice. But pointing out that some of us use that show thread model successfully elsewhere--I severely doubt the intent was to run you off the board.
It is only about going away because you don't want to be polygamous about it. It's not the same thing as being told to leave.

I don't feel like people want to shoo me away altogether, and I'm sorry if what I said came across that way. I just woke up and was feeling defensive and sad, is all. Really I just meant what Jon said:

Because honestly, this is a lot less about wanting to talk TV than it is about wanting to talk with my friends here about TV. What I'm missing is a chance to chat with Buffistas about the SGs and such, not a chance to talk about the shows themselves.
But the thing is? Many of my dearest friends are on the other side of this, and I've already given up posting about TV with them. I think I'm going to just step back and out of this conversation rather than get hurt or hurt them any more at this point. Not flouncing off, honest. Just wanted to express how I'm feeling. I respect that others feel differently.
Here's my thing about cross pollination. I've not been able to follow boxed set in a long time, and yet, through people on this board I still heard about Supernatural, and Eureka, and BSG, and The Riches, and Ice Road Truckers. It was from comments scattered around the various threads or from quick conversations in IM with folks. That's the thing, for me the cross pollination happens through connections with people, and the fewer threads that I can participate in means fewer ways for me to connect with these people. Also, these people are my friends, they are all of you, people I really enjoy. It's hard to express how much I miss talking about these shows with people here and yet that's the way it's been for me for a long time now.
Also, I don't see how bucket threads are more of a board culture than single threads. This board was founded around Buffy and then Angel, and then grew to Firefly. All of these shows had single threads.
To win a vote, the option must have 50% +1. So if the majority vote No Preference, that is essentially a Take No Action vote.
To win a vote, the option must have 50%+1 of the yes/no (or actionable) votes.
Example. Our minimum vote total is 42. If 20 people vote YES, and 17 people vote NO, and 5 people vote NO PREFERENCE, the yes votes take the day. You don't need 50%+1 of 42 (or more). You need 50%+1 of the quantity [yes votes + no votes].
Interesting. 39 people could vote no pref 2 could vote yes and one no and yes would get it.
Yes, but if people didn't want it to pass they would vote No.
