I just rewatched yesterday's episodes, because I ... wanted to. And the end of The Head of a Pin made me cry. DEAN. JA fucking rocked that scene.
It's not my finest work, ita -- I'm better at personal essays than stuff like that, plus I lose a lot of objectivity talking about Winchesters, but I'm glad you didn't hate it! The book has its ups and downs, but yeah, something to save for the dry days of hiatus.
"My dad's name is Bob, my mom's name is Ellen and my sister's name is Jo."
I just got that.
It's the Buffy and Angel? Ew! factor of viewers and reviewers who came to SPN in later seasons. The only backstory they have is the previouslies, and they really don't care so much what got the characters this far. Castiel has always been a major character, Mary always had Insp. Skinner as her dad and was raised a hunter, John has always been an irredeemable asshole, and neither brother has ever died before.
Even if they do pick up backstory, it's layered on top of present mytharc and hasn't been accrued from zero. It gives a different perspective.
They should be ashamed of themselves. Sam died just a few episodes ago. They could at least frame the question differently. I mean, if you're a viewer, it's one thing. But if you get paid to write a column, or otherwise purport to be some sort of authority, at least know you don't know.
I just noticed Sam's buttons make a cross in "The Monster at the End of this Book."

We hates them. Wicked, tricksy, false!

Okay, I really did just laugh out loud. Thanks for that, even if I did have to explain it to the other human in the room.
I don't think the snaps on the shirt making the shape of a cross is a thematic thing, actually. Sam has (and JP, to a con or two, as he seems to dress out of Sam's...duffel) worn that shirt with the diamond-shaped snaps since last season. Seems like I remember it from S3, but I could be wrong. Mere coincidence the snaps forming the cross shape, would be my guess.
Colin was explaining to me that it's not simple to get your character's clothes. But JP has more pull, so maybe it's easy for him.
Still, there are ways.
Maybe they don't like him taking the sheriff stuff because it is harder to replace? Although there has to be uniform places that could be harvested. I mean I can understand to a degree why they would want to keep some stuff in case there was a reshoot or a retcon flashback? Maybe they just want to be able to sell the stuff on ebay. The boys would be easier to outfit.
