Happy Birthday, CaBil!!
I have to stop by the post office to drop off my newest stepsister's baby shower gift (books, what else?) so my mom can take it to the shower on Saturday.
Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, duct tape, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.

Huh. Shia LaBoeuf is in Chicago, and we know this because he was arrested for being drunk and refusing to leave the Walgreens on Chicago and Michigan this weekend.
Happy Birthday CaBil!!
Random question: Who here got spanked by their parents? ::raises hand:: Not too often, though. The last time was probably when I was eight-ish.
How common is it for parents to spank their kids these days?
Raises hand.
Grade school would have been the last time. Ironically enough, probably for fighting.
I did too. Can't recall how old I was last time it happened.
When I was in first grade, it was just after the school had set a policy of no spanking. My teacher was bitter about it - she blamed parents for being too lawsuit-happy.
She had a paddle that she used to use for spanking - it was called "Heat for the Seat."
I'd get a swat every once in a while, and I totally deserved it. After age 8 or so, my parents used the very effective guilt trip method of behavioral adjustment rather than spanking.
I was spanked as a kid. Maybe 2 or 3 times. But we were threatened with it more often than it happened.
I don't have a stance on spanking as a parent.
We occasionally spank Li'l Sphere when he disrespects the time out, but "spank" for us means "a light pat on a diapered hiney," which generally does the job of embarrassing him enough that he prefers the time out.
For my dad, "spanking" involved belts across bare skin, and those probably ran until I was 11. That's not going to happen with us. From what I gather about my dad's upbringing, he thought he was going easy on us.
