Can't even shout, Can't even cry. The Gentlemen are coming by. Looking in windows, knocking on doors. They need to take seven, and they might take yours. Can't call to mom, can't say a word. You're gonna die screaming but you won't be heard.

Leigh! G'day! Stay delurked! Smiths Crisps are as good a reason as any.

Actually there's one company--I think it may also be Smith's--which has been advertising ham and cheese (?) flavoured chips. In the advert a bloke walks into a milk bar and asks for "one ham and cheese", so the milk bar lady cuts a packet of chips in half a la a sandwich.

What's a milk bar?

I think the next UnAmerican thread should be named something regarding foods from around the world.

Nobody

Milk chocolate, I think Jess, but I'm not sure.

You still have Milk Bars? The only one I know of is on Brighton Beach - it was a '90s a bone of contention, because The Kids want to open it as a club/bar/artspace, while The Man refused permission.

Ha, no, a milk bar is just what I guess in the US you would call a corner store. Like a lo-fi version of a convenience store.

From context, I don't think that's it. How can you walk into a milk chocolate bar and place an order?

Edit: X post and thanks Angus

Milk bars (in britain) were alcohol-free bar hangouts for kids. much like Soda counters in 50s Americana. They turn up in Clockwork Orange, too.

I think the next UnAmerican thread should be named something regarding foods from around the world.

For some reason, I'm now thinking: "UnAmericans 2: It's a Yam Sham".

I'm inordinately fond of the yam-sham line.

Not that many, they're all being replaced by 7-11s. (To much gnashing of teeth, but the truth is that Milk Bars were usually crap anyway, and 7-11s are great, so I'm not complaining. Only difference is that a 7-11 won't make you a fresh sandwich or milkshake.)

t edit And from Jim's description Australian milk bars are a bit more basic and less groovy than UK ones.
