Zoe: Next time we smuggle stock, let's make it something smaller. Wash: Yeah, we should start dealing in those black-market beagles.

If I only had a brain...

Don't ask me, I'm still adjusting to it not being "The Congo" and "The Ukraine" any more.

Er...if it's not the Ukraine, what is it???

Farm boys are clueless about social taboos

The things this explains about "Smallville"...

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

if it's not the Ukraine, what is it???

Ukraine.

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

I think "The Ukraine" now wants to be known as "Ukraine". Something about seeming more respectable. I think the Sudan is trying to do teh same thing, except that they're too busy fighting a civil war to correct everybody in the world press.

Same again, Byelorussia is now formally called Belarus. Even though they're basically translations of the same concept, "White Russia".

If I only had a brain...

The claim I heard was that "The Ukraine" makes it sound like a colony rather than a free and independent nation. Same for "The Congo".

Nobody

Hmmmm. Same kind of controversy over "Yukon" versus "the Yukon."

No other candidate is asking the hard questions, like "Did geophysicists assassinate Jim Henson?" or "Why is there hydrogen in America's water supply?" --defective yeti

"The Ukraine" makes it sound like a colony rather than a free and independent nation

Of course, the fact that the word "Ukraine" means "borderland" means the definite article is the least of their problems.

You were a wrong baby who grew up wrong. The wrong kind of wrong. It's better you hear it from a friend.

Of course, the fact that the word "Ukraine" means "borderland" means the definite article is the least of their problems.

I've often thought that there should be a single word in Russian (and, for that matter, Ukrainian) that means "Oh crap, here they come again".

It's five thousand for kissing, ten thousand for snuggling... End of list.

I've often thought that there should be a single word in Russian (and, for that matter, Ukrainian) that means "Oh crap, here they come again".

"Poland."

I adore all you motherfuckers so much -- PMM.

The fact that neither Russian nor Ukranian has a definite article makes the whole debate rather ... errr ... outward-looking.
