They know that this will immediatly be appealed - they're counting on this. They're hoping it will end up in the Supreme Court. And then they'll be hoping that the Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade.
Exactly. It's not so much a law to ban abortion as it's a law to jumpstart a chain of events ending at the Supreme Court.
I don't know which makes me more sick to my stomach.
the instant the opportunity to overturn RvW comes up, he'll chomp on it
Oh, yeah. That's 100% of the reason he was nominated. This is the antithesis of Tom Frank's What the Matter With Kansas?: the Republicans have been promising the religious right action for years and Alito & Roberts were the big payoff.
SD is really really politically polarized. The 2004 senatorial campaign was very ugly.
It's total population around three quarters of a million, in case any one is curious.
In other judicial news, Blackberries continue to work for the time being:

ooh, a Gus sighting.
Between the daily news and watching Lars Von Trier movies, my mind is going to very dark places.
Aimée, I knew a woman years ago in Alabama who had to share her parental rights with the sack of shit who had date-raped her AND been previously issued a restraining order after an arrest outside of her house.
The "moral" of that story is Run! Get that abortion! Faster! Now!
If the state has already created such a hostile environment for abortions that there are only 800 performed a year, access for most women in the state has already been cut off.
Most of the women had to travel all the way to the Twin Cities, where they had to endure the 24-hour waiting period - you know, go in, get all sorts of scare-tactic literature, and then come back the next day for the abortion. Most women couldn't afford the time off, the travel, or the hotel room.
Yeah. Fuck.
I know Digg's not quite a barometer of the world at large, but I'm stunned by the reactions to Bodyworlds. I totally get not wanting to see it, but the depth of emotion of some of the responses startles me.
I thnk the moral of the story is, "Come to Canada! We will kill your babies and marry your gays!"
So, apartment is clean. Girl is enroute. I called in sick to work this morning because I couldn't sleep last night, work up tired as hell, and after yesterday's meeting, my motivation to actually go into work was non-existant.
