Kaylee: You're nice, too. Mal: No, I'm not. I'm a mean old man.

A dress should be tight enough to show you're a woman but loose enough to flee from zombies. — Ginger

One of my favorite Yeats poems:

WHEN you are old and gray and full of sleep
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true;
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face.

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead,
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

A lot of little kids exchange L and R sounds pretty frequently (several kids I babysat would sometimes call me "Hirraly" until they were about three years old), so I can see Sarah and Mary becoming Sally and Molly pretty easily. As for how to get from Molly to Polly, I'm not sure, but there's also Margaret to Meg to Peg, so there's some M/P exchange going on somehow.

If I want to become a cloud of bats, does each bat need a separate vaccination?

Well, M is the a voiced version of the P phoneme. (Whether that has anything to do with how nicknaming works, I do not know.)

Now someone explain how the Russians get "Sasha" from "Alexander"

[edit: Whoops, forgot about B.]

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

Is it just me, or was last night's GA not quite as good as normal?

I fell asleep during, but the early bits with everyone but Meredith hating the dog and Dr. McSatan waiting outside the elevator to greet her and Derek as they exited seemed pretty good.

Nicknames are tricky things. How do you get Lalo from Eduardo in Spanish? Or Pancha from Fernanda?

ION, the second Bridget Jones movie is really, really bad. Bad.

It wasn't just you. I thought it was thoroughly average.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I think my face set early. But not as dramatically as my sister.

PT says he's going to prevent me from taking the brown belt test. Bite me.

Oh dear.

(that's not on the baby ita pictures, which are quite endearing.)

Chile has its first female president. Wow. The DH and I are kind of stunned. We liked Bachelet, but were kind of unsure of whether the country was ready to take the leap. Interesting article in El Mercurio if you read Spanish.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

How do you get Lalo from Eduardo in Spanish? Or Pancha from Fernanda?

The Lalo thing makes sense to me, since I can get pretty close to an L sound saying Eduardo in Spanish (ish). F and P feel close in my mouth, too. I'm fascinated by all this.

I really just don't quite get why people didn't name their kids more different things.
