I was with Emmett when he was circumcized. The doctor (a suave older Jewish OB/GYN who'd been doing circs for about 40 years) just strapped his legs down, but not his arms. The nurse at the time noted that they used to use this wonderful numbing creme but it was now off the market. (There's probably something new that Jen gets to use.)

Emmett was in something sort of like a car-seat, with his legs strapped down. It wasn't cold or uncomfortable. The nurse told me to let him suck my finger while it was happening so he would be comforted.

The doctor started by putting two clamps on separating the foreskin from the penis and cutting off the blood supply. That's when Emmett hollered, so I'm pretty sure that hurt a lot. I gave him my pinky finger and he sucked on it hard for the rest of the procedure. Then the doctor cut the foreskin very quickly, keeping up a steady patter all the time in what seemed like a routine to distract dads from passing out. But I was fine.

The doctor pronounced it, "neat, symmetrical and elegant." Smeared on some topical antibiotic, gauze and we were done in about ten minutes or less. Emmett seemed a little in shock after that, sucking my finger until he went to sleep. He slept for a couple hours and that was pretty much it. You just had to keep changing the dressing for the first week or ten days, with vaseline on it so the gauze wouldn't stick.

Oh - and I first saw uncircumcized penises in my high school locker during gym, where most of the black guys were uncut. Aesthetically they looked off to me, but I'm sure that's a cultural value.

I totally don't even know whether I'm circumcised or not. And since I don't go around looking at penises, I don't really have a point of comparison.

PC-- if the top of your penis looks basically the same whether you are erect or flacid you are circumcised.

That's what I thought. Yeah, I am. I'm trying to imagine an uncut penis, and it looks really weird. But then again, I figure any penis that doesn't look like mine is weird, since it's the one I'm most accustomed to.

Penises do look weird. Like Elaine said on that episode of Seinfeld: "I don't know how you guys walk around with those things."

Don't get me wrong--I appreciate the penis and all it can do, but...yeah. Looks funny.
