She does get more depth in this episode, but even that is only told to us by Angel; all we know is that his horrific actions caused her to lose a grip on reality. It does feel weird to me that this is the only aspect to define at this point. She’s strange and awkward, and now we learn it’s all Angel’s fault.

I guess "break with reality" is as close to crazy as he is going to get to describe her. I don't get not loving her right from the very first second, and I have never thought to use the word "awkward" to describe her.

Dru is not awkward. She's mad as a box of frogs, but graceful.

Willow is awkward. Xander is awkward.

I read the review, I'm starting to get bored with his hang ups about Xander, it feels like he's got personal issues he's projecting on to Xander. Or something.

As for Dru.

I'd never read Mark WAtches/Read before this. I'm not sure if he's ever dealt with characters that were not sane. I get that he doesn't like the word crazy nor does he want to use it. From what people have said here, saying someone is insane is okay, or at least acknowledging they are mentally ill is okay.

However, there's a big difference between not using a word you think is a slur and ignoring a huge aspect of a character.

It's going to feel really insulting if he's flat out refused to acknowledge her mental state.

But I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that maybe he's not sure exactly how much of a role Dru is going to play. Maybe he thinks she's just going to be Spike's "strange and awkward" girlfriend who is also weak and "helpless". She did turn whatshername in School Hard and tried to eat a kid in Lie To Me, but she hasn't been really threatening other than that and has just been in the "girlfriend" role.
