Ben: I didn't ask for any of this. I just want to be normal. Gronx: I wanted to be an underwear model. We play the hand we're dealt.

Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

I'm so jealous that you got to meet her! I wanna!

Well Rio, time to schedule that New England visit and meet ALL the NE Buffistas.

I can't even.

Except you get only one of Frank or Cindy, due to that whole space-time continuum thing.

We may both be at the NE gathering for JZ, so look for the universe to possibly end the first weekend in August.

Curses! That's the week I'm in San Fran. Perhaps being on the other side of the continent will mean I am one of the survivors.

Also, not holding my breath, re the Frank and Cindy meetage ...

Are you ready to be strong?

Jon, you're gonna forward that to FW, right?

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

Jon, you're gonna forward that to FW, right?

You mean what David said? Already done. She wrote back that she was "blushing furiously".

I think it's funny that Saget has met her but you haven't. We need an excuse to visit Chicago (not that visiting you isn't reason enough)!

FW. That's good. I liked FAQ Girl, but FAQWife makes me think, "isn't that something issued by Muslim clerics?"

If anyone wants the MP3s from that Staggerlee site, I have most of them; 27 versions, IIRC.

Cool. Maybe you could send a few of your favorites to buffistarawk, Jim. Did you see this site -- 218 versions! (Just listings, no audio.) It also led me to Cecil Brown's Stagolee website. The version titled "Toast - New York, 1967" is NOT safe for work listening unless you're wearing headphones, and maybe not even then. Interesting legal defense by Stack's girlfriend. Btw, Cecil Brown is best-known for his 1969 novel The Life and Loves of Mr. Jiveass Nigger, so I'm thinking his interest in the whole Staggerlee mythos goes way back.

Speaking of buffistarawk, Corwood, I finally converted the first EDO album to mp3s & tried to send it to you last night, but gmail was acting wonky & yousendit timed out. I burned it & brought it to work. Much faster connection here. I'll try sending again this afternoon.

I just found a little goldmine.

Today's obsession is Andrew Bird and following a link on his website, I got to the in-studio performance archive page for 89.3 Minnesota Public Radio.

It's streaming, not .mp3s. But what a collection: Bird, Rilo Kiley, Ted Leo, Eels, Bob Mould (doing Workbook-era stuff), Mercury Rev, Robbie Fulks, Leo Kottke, M.Ward, the Shins, Lou Barlow, Low.

I know what I'm listening to this morning.

ETA: The Rilo Kiley is jaw-droppingly good. Jenny Lewis' voice is so amazing. Great interview with Bob Mould and he plays a song of his new album (Body of Song - "Paralyzed") and it sounds (thank you jesus!) like OLD Mould. So good.

We need an excuse to visit Chicago

What Rio said!
