Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

And you need an 11 for the Ukelele Orchestra Of Great Britain, whose cover of Wuthering Heights is the pinnacle of western civilisation thus far.

The Decemberists were covering it on their last tour with Petra singing lead. Probably not as good as the Ukelele guys, but serviceable.

Download a free copy of the promotional cd that was given out at the premiere of the Flaming Lips documentary Fearless Freaks.

The intro track fully endorses passing the files around.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

I'm listening to Nouvelle Vague - bossa nova covers of 80s post punk (and punk) classics.

Love this. But I disagree with the AMG review in that I think "Making Plans for Nigel" is one of the best things on the record.

Ann, that's a ferret.

I'm listening to a Webcast from a London radio station. They''re interviewing someone who operates a passenger boat and is offering ferry transport across the Thames, to help people get home.

In the past few minutes on London radio -- the new Joss Stone single, followed by Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River."

News report says 37 dead.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

A brief extract from Kim Cooper's book on NMH's In the Aeroplane, Over the Sea:

I've read the whole manuscript and the book is wonderful. She did some fantastic reporting chronicling the genesis of the whole Elephant 6 scene, and how this particular record came together. It's actually a very moving story about friendship and making music together. You also realize why/how a follow-up to Aeroplane is so unlikely. It took a very rare confluence of personalities and a moment in time to make that record. Basically we're lucky to have anything like it.

Done. Thanks, Jon.

I'm listening to Nouvelle Vague - bossa nova covers of 80s post punk (and punk) classics.

I got a copy of it today from a co-worker who thought I would like it. Can't wait to hear it.

Basically we're lucky to have anything like it.

Wrod. A friend who I gave it to over a year ago called me the other night to say he had suddenly started to listening to it due to it coming up on shuffle on his iPod and that he was stunned at how good it was and how long it had taken for him to get into it. He wasn't surprised at all that I was kind of ridiculously happy that he was that enthusiastic about it.

I'm excited to read the book eventually.

In continuing Sufjan Stevens news - the record company gave retailers permission to sell the copies that they were holding but that's it. They say it will be 3 months until they can re-release the album with new cover art. I've downloaded most of it and it's just stunning. Really, really good.

And now I can't find a store with a copy of it anywhere near me. It's certainly not that dire a request - but - if a fellow Sufjan-loving buffista goes to get a copy and can grab two - I'd happily pay for shipping and handling and love you dearly and forever. I *really* want a copy with the original cover art.

I'll swing by Amoeba and see what's available. Obviously these covers are going to be collectible like the first printing of Some Girls.

Uh-huh.

Gracias, sir! I am going to check a few places I haven't been able to get on the phone tonight but everyone is telling me that "shipments from the West Coast" were sent back before even arriving here. Ironic, given that we are the state the album is named after.
