A friend of mine just got the best job ever -- a "producer" at iTunes. Here's how she describes it:
the Essentials section of itunes is where they do custom playlists -- "bob marley 101", or "'60s psyche essentials", that sort of thing. they have only one person dedicated full time to this section, so i'm the second, and will have lots of say in how the section grows, etc. you know how much i love to organize music, and i spend so much time thinking about how to make the underground stuff accessible to all folks, so i think this position is just perfect for me.
t edit The other person in this section is Gary Stewart. He comes from rhino and is the guy who did the nuggets boxes.

That's awesome Jon. I love that section of iTunes, and buy a lot of stuff from it. It's much easier when you know what kind of "mood" you're in, but not really what you're looking for.

I really like the "essentials" section of iTunes as well; if iTunes didn't already have a virtual monopoly it would be the killer app for me.
And of course there's always things that are inexplicably left out of a particular list, but to have 75 "essential" trip-hop songs without Massive Attack? WTF?!

What's sad. Btw, bon, they've been playing a Massive Attack video regularly on VH-1's The Alternative ("Daydreaming" from Blue Lines) which makes me think of you every time.

I think a lot of that comes down to what they have the rights to. For example, you can't get any Dr. Dre right now, and I know there's other stuff I've looked for that they didn't have -- Radiohead, I think.
And I love the Essentials section, too. Though I'm not sure whether I find it offensive or just funny that the gay women's Essential is basically every song by any female artist who ever considered not shaving her armpits, and the gay men's Essential is all dancy club kitschy stuff.
So, Jon, I am very jealoous of Windy also.

I considered that, LJ, but they have Massive. I do know that the (now largely defunct) group doesn't like to be grouped under trip-hop, so that may be why...but no one likes the name.
