I considered that, LJ, but they have Massive. I do know that the (now largely defunct) group doesn't like to be grouped under trip-hop, so that may be why...but no one likes the name.

Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan
There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.
She's local to you, David. It's Windy, the former owner of Aquarius.
I was already jealous of her for owning the coolest record store in the city. (Which I know she's since sold.) Still, she's more than qualified.

Really? In that case, I got nothin'.
And of course there's always things that are inexplicably left out of a particular list, but to have 75 "essential" trip-hop songs without Massive Attack? WTF?!
The hell? Didn't they practically invent it?
puts on the recently acquired "Angel"

Yeah, the latest CD only featured one of the original members, right? Even so, "Future Proof" kicks all kinds of ass.
This, like the LotR board, could easily replace everything else I normally read (online; heathens, for even suspecting I'd give up books and COMICS!)
Besides the quintessential Massive Attack, what other triphop that's rather downtempo-ish would people recommend? Auteuchre takes care of my ping-pong uptempt requirements. :)
(I ask for recommendation because I'm a serious darkambient and classical music freak, and some of these other newfangled genres confound my ancient, grey-and-balding head.)

Obvious places to go would be anything by Portishead (esp. their first), the first Morcheeba record. First Goldfrapp record.
Various Ultra Chilled collections (though some of these can be bland. Others can be decent samplers.)
Here's somebody's Amazon chillout list with some trip hop classics
I was gonna say Portishead, Hec! Dammit, I so very rarely have anything useful to say in here, and you stole my thunder.

That's about all I knew until bon bon educated me in the genre.
As consolation I offer you...
The pirate themed party girls of Bootie (the mashup club
Well damn.
Ladytron is more electronica than trip-hop, but they're awesome.
Oh! I've been listening to a lot of Sneaker Pimps lately. They count.
