How about Leonard Cohen's "Closing Time?"
'Our Mrs. Reynolds'
Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan
There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.
Oh, how coult I forget The Replacements' "Here Comes a Regular"? My favorite bar song evah!
A few more suggestions:
Flipper - "If I Can't Be Drunk"
Cornell Hurd Band (I think) - The Lone Star Beer Theme
Replacements - "Beer for Breakfast" (edit - and, of course, I second "Here Comes a Regular")
Alejandro Escovado - "I Was Drunk"
Uncle Tupelo - "Punch Drunk"
Jason & the Scorchers - "Broken Whisky Glass"
I love "One for My Baby" (put the Sinatra version on my Buffistamix) and "Here Comes a Regular" but they're both real bummers. Not ideal party songs. If that doesn't matter there are a bunch of George Jones and Charlie Rich drinking -- or more accurately "I'm a drunk" -- songs that are really great. For more upbeat drinking songs, besides what's been recommended already (yay, Mojo! yay, Los Lobos!), I also suggest:
1) "Cocktails for Two," Spike Jones -- Prohibition is over, let's get loaded! Sung by the great Carl Grayson. In some secluded rendezvous [WHOOOPPPEEEE!!!]... And that's my favorite City slicker, Red Ingle, coughing up a lung in response to the lines, As we enjoy a cigarette/To some exquisite chansonette.
2) "White Lightnin'," George Jones -- Speaking of city slickers...
Well a city slicker came and he said "I'm tough"
I think I wanna taste that powerful stuff
He took one sweet slug and drank it right down
And I heard him moaning as he hit the ground
"Mighty, mighty pleasin, your pappy's corn squeezin'"
Wheeew . . . white lightnin'
3) "Let's Go Get Stoned," Ray Charles -- About drinking, not smoking. Written by Ashford & Simpson before they secured their spot in history with the Marvin & Tammi duets.
Alejandro Escovado - "I Was Drunk"
and his brother Mario's band the Dragons' -- "Three Steps from the Bar"
"You & Me & the Bottle Makes 3" -- Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
Steph, this is one of mine and Jon's favorites, if only for the end- which reminds him of some of his patrons- "Whadda ya mean it's last call!?! I just got heeeeeeeer!"
Hey, soundtrack fans, there was a very interesting interview with Hollywood Bowl Music Director John Mauceri today on Soundcheck. He loves film scores and is a, perhaps the, major proponent of live performances of movie music. Lots of cool stories, especially the mutual influence on each other of everyone's favorite tennis partners(!), George Gershwin and Arnold Schoenberg. Worth a listen.
One of my oldest friends gave me a belated birthday present last night: a mix CD she made entitled "About Jillian"; all songs that she associates with me or our friendship. I'm completely knocked out by it, and it is easily one of the most thoughtful mixes I've ever been given. The songs are:
From one Jesus to Another – The Mission UK
Lindy’s Party – The Bolshoi
Devil Bunnies – My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult
I’m Cute – Animaniacs
Keep Young & Beautiful – Annie Lennox
Pretty in Pink – Psychedelic Furs
Dear Prudence – Siouxsie
Maria – Blondie
Why Can’t I Be You – The Cure
Home – Depeche Mode
A Few of My Favorite Things – Me First & the Gimme Gimmes
You’re My Best Friend – Queen
Magic – The Cars
Europa & the Pirate Twins – Thomas Dolby
Tea in the Sahara – Sting
Last Year’s Troubles – Suzanne Vega
Happy Phantom – Tori Amos

"Empty Glasses" is an excellent suggestion, but about that song your Dad likes? You know - the one that says something about "My head is like a football."
