Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

with a gleam in my eye, and an almost airtight alibi

I still haven't finalized my end-of-year compilation CD for '04! Which is music that was important to me in '04, not necesarily released in '04. And I think I will make a compilation for friends and family, and then a playlist for ME, because fitting everything onto one CD, not to mention the thought of the look on my cousins' faces listening to "99 Problems," was giving me a headache. Anyhow. Here's the rough cut of the CD, so far, so it's track listing order, not best-of order --

1. The Mountain Goats, "Your Belgian Things"
2. Clem Snide, "I'll Be Your Mirror" (hi, Jon!)
3. David Byrne and Rufus Wainwright, "Au Fond du Temple Saint"
4. Pet Shop Boys (feat. Johnny Marr), "I Didn't Get Where I Am Today"
5. Dizzee Rascal, "Stand Up Tall"
6. Deathray Davies, "She Can Play Me Like a Drum Machine"
7. Mary Lou Lord, "I Figured You Out"
8. The Magnetic Fields, "I Don't Really Love You Anymore"
9. The Postal Service, "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight"
10. The Beastie Boys, "An Open Letter to NYC"
11. Rufus Wainwright, "The One You Love"
12. Reindeer Section, "You Are My Joy"
13. Old 97s, "Won't Be Home"
14. Nora O'Connor, "Bottoms"
15. Madeleine Peyroux, "Don't Wait Too Long"
16. Kings of Convenience, "Homesick"
17. Hidden bonus track!!!

A best-of for the year would have to include Jay-Z, "99 Problems," Britney Spears, "Toxic," and the Shins' second album, among many others.

That's the pain / That cuts a straight line down through the heart / We call it love

11. Rufus Wainwright, "The One You Love"

Hell yeah, I love this song.

14. Nora O'Connor, "Bottoms"

Ooh, I've been debating whether or not to get this album. How do you think she stacks up against the other ladies of Bloodshot?

"You see? THAT's what they want. Love, and a bit with a dog."

Does anyone have the BNL Christmas album? If so, is the version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings the one with Sarah McLachlan?

Good stuff. I had this playing nonstop in my car until I got the Garden State soundtrack.

O'Connor has a gorgeous, gorgeous voice. If you have the Bloodshot 5th anniversary comp, you've heard her -- she covers Tom Waits's "Looks Like I'm Up Shit Creek Again" on it. Also, she sang with the Blacks, who I never liked, but on the other hand, that's her doing justice to "Poor Old Heartsick Me" on the Knitters tribute CD too.

She performs sometimes with Kelly Hogan, and is closest to her in style of the Bloodshot group, I think, though less of a belter. I heard her, Kelly, and John Wesley Harding perform together in New York in September and they sounded just amazing together.
