The sound is pure sap, but it's a breakup song -- "Leave Right Now" by Will Young.
Also, a lot of stuff from the '60s would be up that alley. Comes to mind -- "Don't Sleep in the Subway" by Petula Clark, "For Once in My Life" by Stevie Wonder (lyrics = sap, but hidden by great Motown sound), "Words of Love" by the Mamas and the Papas, "I Got Rhythm" by the Happenings, "Let's Hang On" by the 4 Seasons. "I Can Hear Music" by the Beach Boys is probably too much sap, but it's such a well-put together single.
Big Star -- "I'm In Love With a Girl"
My buddy John's band the Dexateens just had an album come out on Estrus that's getting very good press. I'm glad people are noticing it. It rocks like Hank Sr fronting the Stooges, and I'm a big fan of redneck punk.
<taking notes furiously>
It's sappy - but it's my fave : "All I Want is You" by U2
I like that song, but I'm not sure I like it as much as "Sweetest Thing" or their cover of "Everlasting Love." Decisions, decisions...
“Wizard of Finance” by Parliament from the album Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome: “If I were a wizard of finance I’d prob'ly invest my whole life in you. My dividend would be so tremendous, baby, even Dow Jones won't believe it's true.”
John Prine & Iris Dement's "In Spite of Ourselves" is very funny ("He ain't got laid in a month o' Sundays/Caught him once, he was sniffin' my undies") and kinda sweet in a twisted way ("In spite of ourselves we'll end up sittin' on a rainbow/Against all odds, honey, we're the big door prize").
Richard & Linda Thompson's "Dimming of the Day" is one of his finest songs & one of her finest vocals, and that's saying something on both counts.

We used to have that CD. Patrick really doesn't like DeMent's voice. But yes, funny, funny song.
I take it back. "All I Want is You" is my favorite crush/want to be in love song. My favorite in-love song is "Mystifies Me" by Son Volt (Trace).
Patrick really doesn't like DeMent's voice.
I always figured she had the sort of voice that would provoke a strong reaction one way or the other; I'm in the "I love her singing so much that I'm incapable of rational thought about it" camp.

This is one of my favorite songs ever. Beautiful lyrics. It's a great song to sing around the house and pretend you can really sing.

imagines kat perez singing this in her orange living room at sunset...
