It's a real burden being right so often.

Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

I take it back. "All I Want is You" is my favorite crush/want to be in love song. My favorite in-love song is "Mystifies Me" by Son Volt (Trace).

Patrick really doesn't like DeMent's voice.

I always figured she had the sort of voice that would provoke a strong reaction one way or the other; I'm in the "I love her singing so much that I'm incapable of rational thought about it" camp.

"We have trust issues." Mylar

Richard & Linda Thompson's "Dimming of the Day"

This is one of my favorite songs ever. Beautiful lyrics. It's a great song to sing around the house and pretend you can really sing.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

imagines kat perez singing this in her orange living room at sunset...

This is one of my favorite songs ever. Beautiful lyrics.

It's from the period when he was writing love songs that were really love songs to Allah, not to Linda (e.g., "A Heart Needs a Home"). Good stuff.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

Sweet! The album version of "Dimming of the Day" goes into the plaintive bagpipe-tune-as-played-on-guitar "Dargai". The live version of "A Heart Needs a Home" on Watching the Dark is exquisite for Da Luff, too.

Other good semi-obscure folk-indie love songs:

  • The Silos, "The Only Story I Tell" - The Silos
  • Graham Parker, "Love Gets You Twisted" - Squeezing Out Sparks
  • Freakwater, "My One Desire" - Old Paint (yes, this is the Ricky Nelson song)
  • Jayhawks, "Blue" - Tomorrow The Green Grass
  • Wilco, "Pick Up the Change" - AM
  • Uncle Tupelo, "The Long Cut" - Anodyne
  • Replacements, "Kiss Me On The Bus" - Tim (this ought to be your lead-off track)
  • Beat Happening, "Cast a Shadow" - Black Candy or "Godsend" - You Turn Me On
  • Yo La Tengo, "You Can Have It All" - ...and then nothing, etc.
  • The Raincoats, "No Side To Fall In" - s/t
  • The Mekons, "Last Dance" - Fear & Whiskey
  • Gene Clark, "Here Tonight" - Roadmaster & American Dreamer
  • If Big Star's "I'm In Love With A Girl" doesn't work, try "Dream Lover" off of Third.

A fellow makes himself conspicuous when he throws soft-boiled eggs at the electric fan.

I'm a big fan of Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic," Victoria William's "Love," and um, all of Al Green?

Or combine the twin obsessions and go with RT's cover of "Here Without You", with help from Clive Gregson & Christine Collister, "who are absolutely fab and you can buy their record on the way out, you mugs, you suckers you! You've got all that good Republican money jinglin' in your pocket get out there and spend some, get those CDs!" (The recording is from the Bayou in DC & it was recorded the night before the 1988 elections.)
