Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

Peel tirelessly advocated for The Fall, too. I'd go so far as to contend that Mark E. Smith would be a dockworker without John Peel. My favorite Peel Sessions: Sonic Youth doing Fall songs a year or two ago, the Slits inventing Brit rap in 1979, and Can engaging in some serious sonic deconstruction in the late 70s.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

They weren't much more than four track, though, right?

I think they used a 16 track recorder.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I think they used a 16 track recorder.

Pffft. Sgt. Pepper was made on an 8 track, wasn't it?

Yeah, but Martin bounced stuff around. It's not like they recorded everything at once onto 8 tracks. In any case, I don't think Maida Vale got the 16 track until the late 70's.

Up with the sun

And of course, I have no clue about this "Black Velvet" business.

I'm sure you do, P-C. It's sexy, smoky, and hooky -- the best kind of pop hit, kind of a little sister to "Son of a Preacher Man," but about Elvis. The lyrics would probably help you place it.

Ah, Dismemberment Plan! And that is actually a mix cd formula that I've never seen before. How rare and exciting.

I LOVELOVELOVE the Plan. (Did you ever see them live? The CDs are good, but their live shows were astounding.)

The mix formula was devised in this thread back in january -- msbelle took suggestions, than put the categories in order. It was inspired by a Frankenmix meme over on artofthemix.org.

And RIP to John Peel.

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

Lyra Jane, I meant to tell you that I have a copy of your original mix, along with all the individual mp3s if you want them.

(I could've sworn I posted that yesterday, but I must've forgot to hit that pesky "post" button.)

Thanks, but I don't think I need them -- I do have my own copy. I was just feeling too lazy last night to rip any more tracks, so I decided to go with what I had on the computer already.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

I'm sure you do, P-C. It's sexy, smoky, and hooky -- the best kind of pop hit, kind of a little sister to "Son of a Preacher Man," but about Elvis. The lyrics would probably help you place it.

Possibly. The only Alannah Myles song I know is "Bad 4 You," which is all right. A friend put it on a mix CD. But my knowledge of music can often be termed "woefully ignorant," so...

Post-Google, I'm thinking I've still never heard it.

JohnSweden - Oct 26, 2004 10:50:44 am PDT #5597 of 10003
I can't even.

MuchMusic up here (our MTV) is terribly snarky about Alannah Myles, but I think (hope) that's a familiarity breeds contempt kinda thing, since she got a ton of airplay back in the Black Velvet days (as CanCon).

I particularly remember a full claws and ears remark that went something like "I'm sure there are still men in prison that find Alannah Myles attractive", so there are pluses and minuses to coming from a smaller market.

I look more rad than Lutheranism

1) I had no idea that song was about Elvis. Though I admit the only words I can ever quite understand are "new religion" and what sounds like "blackbird" but is probably "black velvet."

2) I'm a philistine in my dislike of "Black Velvet." Mostly it's b/c I don't like her voice. I tend to not like women singers with that kind of almost-raspy voice, though (like Heart), so it's a whole group that I'm slandering, not just Alannah Myles.
