Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan
There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.
3) A song from the first album, cassette, or CD (whichever was first or the oldest that you still have access to) that you purchased for yourself. Banana Splits "I Enjoy Being a Boy" This was on a 7" EP that I got by sending in some box tops from Kellogs cereals. My original copy was tossed at some point during my childhood, but I found a replacement many years later at a used record store.
Oooh, cool. My brother and I sent for a Banana Splits single back in the day, perhaps that very one.
Mary Lou Lord "Some Jingle Jangle Morning" Back in the late 80's I knew MLL as a street musician who'd do Bevis Frond, Daniel Johnston, and Richard Thompson covers. She had eclectic tastes so when I heard her do this song I assumed that it was another obscure cover. I was shocked (shocked I tells ya!) when she told me that she had written it.
Love love love that song. Supposedly it's about her and Kurt Cobain. (Wasn't Ms. Lord the one Courtney Loved attacked on stage, or am I confused?) Oh, and is this the accoustic single version, or the album version. I only have the single version as a 45.
Twice she was supposed to play Chicago, but each time she cancelled to go back into rehab or something.
Go Jon!!. [ahem]

I believe the attackee you're thinking of was Kathleen Hanna, but yeah, MLL did have a fling with Kurt before he was married, and that song is about it.
It's the album version. I was hoping to find the acoustic version she did on WMBR, which is where I first heard her do it, but I couldn't find it amongst my disorganized cassettes.

I think CL also went after MLL on at least one occasion, but I think she got away before it got physical, whereas KH did get smacked around.
CL described MLL as somene who gave KC a blow job once, and made a career out of that. Which, given Courtney Love's (ahem) "talent," is pretty funny.
"Camden Town Rain" is even more clearly about the whole situation (from MLL's POV) than "Some Jingle Jangle Morning."
(And yeah, I do like some Hole. But still.)
Can I just rant here about WHAT is the USE of an ITUNES Music Store without Sheila E's "Glamorous Life"?
The whole point of the one-song, one-dollar thing is to make all one-hit wonders instantly available. Right? Right.
Back to, you know, actual music DISCUSSION.

Excuse me. My jaw just fell to the floor and rolled under a table.

It is pretty funny, but more to the point, CL is full of shit. I know MLL very well, and back then she talked to me about the sitch (even before she wrote the songs about it). I believed MLL. She had no reason to lie to me and no reason to lie to "boost" her career. There was no point -- Kurt wasn't that famous yet.
This means that I will mail Joe mine AND Tommyrot's together on Monday. Whee!
You are frighteningly efficient.
Due to unforeseen technical difficulties mine won't go out until tomorrow. If I can't resolve the problems tonight I'm just gonna replace the offending tracks, which would be a bummer. The mix as currently constituted.
I didn't wory much about transitions but ended up with some that made me very happy. At one point, when worried about time, I was going to use "Bilbao Song" to knock out three contiguous categories (name: Joe, non-English: German, city: Bilbao). Made some changes & had plenty of time so was able to use one of my favorite songs, "One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)", which gave me back to back songs with bartenders named Joe. Any misgivings I had about using a song w/ my own name went out the window once I realized that. Almost used "Long Black Veil" as a cover following "That Old Black Magic" but got whiplash changing tones so radically. "Twisted" to "Exley" to "An Occasional Man" is kinda rough, too, and Little Willie John to Mojo... well, there's always shuffle.
Jon, I didn't mean to insult MLL AT ALL. The whole reason I brought it up was that I thought it was a dumbass thing for CL to say. (A dumbass thing for anyone to say, but especially stupid considering the source.)
Should I delete my post?
Joe, I used a song with my own name, too.
Because I could.
And checking out the iTunes store led me to a cover of that song, which led me to go to Emusic to see if they had that (small) band up there, which they didn't, but led me to a 70s band of similar name, which led me to a disco compilation album, which led to me listening to Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" RIGHT NOW, AIFG.
