"Come Sail Away" (how apropos!) was the big spotlight dance in "The Virgin Suicides" and "Freaks and Geeks".

I remember an essay (or maybe it was a MBTV review) about the use of "Come Sail Away" in Freaks & Geeks -- how it seems like a slow song but suddenly rawks in a pretty annoying way. Anyway, I'm going to have to dig my F&G dvds out & watch 'em again now, y'know.

If rocking when the aliens come is wrong, then I don't want to be right.

But Neil Young didn't start rocking when the aliens came in "After the Gold Rush"!

But would he have objected to others rocking? Well, maybe if those others were Styx, but still....

It's really well-chosen for that scene because (memfault) has just gotten up the courage to ask Cindy to dance, and just as they start the music gets fast and he freezes, and she beckons him to dance anyhow, and it's just incredibly sweet and made me smile and become slightly teary.

I remember the crazy days. 500 posts an hour. Nubmer! Natgbsb

if I can swing it, Open Arms will be some cheesy ass dance at my wedding. Awww yeah. Maybe I can get the DJ to announce, "couple dance, couples dance only, ladies choice"

IIRC, Sam tries to work up his nerve to ask the cute chick to dance. He waits for a slow song. He delays and delays until the Styx song comes on at which point he delays some more. He finally asks and she says yes. They've been dancing for about ten seconds when the song breaks into its fast section. I wonder if the DJ was using the limited edition yellow-vinyl copy of Grand Illusion.

As far as I can tell, Neil thinks that the only appropriate response is to fly Mother Nature's silver seed to a new home in the sun.

And yeah, LJ & JB are right about the F&G dance -- the song is perfect for the moment 'cause the point was to embarrass Sam. But not so perfect from Sam's POV.

Hey, Joe, since you asked about this a little while back, here's a sneak preview of the Firesign Theatre article in the new High Hat.
