Zoe: First rule of battle, little one. Don't ever let 'em know where you are. Mal: Whoo-hoo! I'm right here! I'm right here! You want some of me? Yeah, you do! Come on! Come on! Aaah! Whoo-hoo! Zoe: Of course, there are other schools of thought...

Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Hey, I have limits as to how evil I'll be.

Ann, that's a ferret.

The generation that could change the world is still looking for its car keys.

Hey, now, SA, don't be dissin' on the Gambler.

But anybody who has ever had ANYTHING to do with American Idol is fair game.

I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve. - John Prine

I'll give Hec a break from his usual pimping duties & do it for him. Just received this from his co-editor, Kim Cooper:

Dear contributors,

I just wanted to share with you the below, our first feedback from our publisher on the "Lost in the Grooves" manuscript.

"Also, Kim & David: I looked over the MS and frankly there's not much editing for me to do . . . the writing is wonderful, and I would just louse it up if I were to try to change the author's style(s) -- we will give DETAILED INSTRUCTION to the production department not to mess with it either when they give it to a copy editor."

best,
Kim

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

pumps fist...

Credit goes to JZ too, who took a red pencil to the entire manuscript. Not making any textual changes, but wrangling the errant "its/it's" and wacky comma abuse. That was before I had to go edit for content and rewrite the run-on sentences and cut for length while maintaining style and meaning.

She did note that the Buffistas, as a group, produced remarkably clean prose.

I think this is the One True Common Trait (besides kinda liking Buffy) that all Buffistas might share.

Go Hec! Go contributors and Go JZ! That's great feedback.

Da Vinci Code, watch out: we're going straight to the top! (I know there's no money, but we'll get some groupies, right?)

Willie Nelson's cover of "September Song" popped up on my player right before I got Kim's email & it reminded me of Lou's great cover on Hal Willner's Kurt Weill tribute Lost in the Stars (much better than his cover of the same song on Willner's second Weill tribute, September Songs). So of course I started wondering if George Russell recorded it, too, giving me the "Lost in the Grooves" hat trick, but alas I found no evidence of any Weill in his discography. I doubt that there's more than a couple degrees of separation, though. (His buddies Miles & Gil Evans did a killer version of "My Ship" on Miles Ahead that was perhaps their finest collaboration.)

Oh sure, you know Greil pulls the birds.

I love Lost in the Stars - probably my favorite of the Willner projects. Though I did like the sheer wackiness of Mingus/Partch, and listen to the Nino Rota a lot too. Stay Awake has lots of good stuff too, particularly Tom Waits and The Replacements and Los Lobos. Plus, Ken Nordine!

I am the exception to the rule. I have very intuitive grammar...and I happen to be queen of the comma splice.
