To celebrate Fat Tuesday, Kansas City is presenting The Flaming Lips with a key to the city.
Yay KC - but that is odd, right?
About 5 p.m. Tuesday, KC Mayor Kay Barnes will present the keys to Kansas City to the Lips' Wayne Coyne and Kliph Scurlock. The presentation will take place under a heated tent near 18th and Wyandotte streets. The event kicks off the annual Mardi Gras celebration.
Which means it is happening right now....Huh.
More than 300 Web sites and blogs staged a 24-hour online protest yesterday over a record company's efforts to stop them from offering downloadable copies of "The Grey Album." A popular underground collection of music, "The Grey Album" mixes tracks from the Beatles' classic White Album with raps from Jay-Z's latest release, "The Black Album."
The protesters billed the event as "Grey Tuesday," calling it "a day of coordinated civil disobedience," during which more than 150 sites offered the album for download. Recording industry lawyers saw it as 24 hours of mass copyright infringement and sent letters to the Web sites demanding that they not follow through on the protest.
The Grey Album pro and anti forces are alive and well in my office. Three of my co-workers have spent all morning printing, cutting and making labels for their copies while others were engaged in an extremely heated debate about sampling. Who knew it would cause such a stir? And who still thinks they can do anything to stop sampling?
"Change Clothes" went on my Feb. mix. But now when I listen to it, I am skipping it - just wanted to put it on there for posterity.
