Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Very nice.

There's also a metaphor about guitar playing based on truck lot whores and a reference to "a black pubic hair caught in a crust of blood on polyblend panties." So you can see I have not stinted on the Nasteee while describing The Gun Club's punk blues.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

"she's like heroin to me" was my favorite love song for a while....

edit: i just love fire of love.

Have you heard the Congo-Norvell version of this song? They do it as a very slow, narcotic duet. It's amazing. Just gorgeous and it highlights the lyrics, and Kid Congo plays fantastic guitar on it.

nope. that sounds really cool. i'll have to look out for that.

mazzy star does a nice cover of "ghost on the highway." (the gun club did write that, right?)

edit: come to think of it, i have heard someone do a slow cover of "she's like heroin to me."

It's in the used bins here at Amoeba.

Yup, Gun Club. Another band covered it on one of the Bloodshot comps too.

Once more, with bolding:

You say it's your birthday
It's my birthday too--yeah

Yep, it's an honor to share my birthday not only with everyone's favorite thereminist/actuary/music know-it-all, but also with Mr. Anthony Stewart Head, and my son Walter (the Frankenphotoshopper)

hey hec - do you know the origin of the term "gun club"? here's one possibility, anyway. it's an informal term that refers to a group of high-ranking officers on a us navy battleship. they were in charge of the big guns, or battleship gun strategy or something like that.

of course, it's also used for a club for people to shoot their rifles, etc. for all i know this might predate the us navy usage. come to think of it, it makes sense for the navy to have adopted it from this usage.

Happy birthday, bicyclops! It's a propitious day indeed.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

This is all I've got Tom:

[Pierce] met Kid Congo Powers and insisted he learn guitar, and they formed the Creeping Ritual in 1980-81....the name changed to Gun Club after a suggestion by the Circle Jerks' Keith Morris....Jeffrey's longtime friend, then-roommate.

Bag the crypto. Say what is on your mind.

Sorry to butt in. A hypodermic is sometimes referred to as a "gun." OK, butting out, now.
