If Joyce hadn't died, she'd have been around when Buffy died. To save her imaginary sister. I could see not wanting to put Joyce through that. Although I also have trouble believing anyone put that much thought into it.

Oh, oh! Or, if Joyce hadn't died, Riley wouldn't have gotten all put out over Buffy's refusal to share her feelings or whatever his problem was, and then they might not have broken up. So Buffy might have figured the trade-off was worth it.
