"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Regarding Kings, this is more or less what happened. I x-posted about the show before it aired in both threads to test the waters - the conversation in Natter died, but flourished in BS.

I didn't know you did that. It was smart of you to do that.

I'm with ita on not understanding the confusion about what falls under Boxed Set. SFF seems a fairly bright line to me.

I used to think it was a clear line, too. Because I know what I consider SF. But at this point I'm convinced that "you know it when you see it" is not functional. It's obvious to me that Cupid is not SF. It is obvious to ita that it is.

Past examples, for whatever help they may be:

From Bureau, Aug 2007

What about Bionic Woman and Sarah Connor? Even though they could technically be called sci fi, they don't seem like they'll have that Boxed Set vibe. Trying to sort that out in my mind, I see sort of an AU going on in BS type shows. I think of those more as "normal world, but with robots".

i've always assumed that anything sci-fi belonged in Boxed Set and therefore Pushing Daisies, Sarah Connor Chronicles and Bionic Woman all fall into it.

I could see putting [Medium] in Boxed Set, what with the psychic (Dead Zone is there).

I don't really see Medium as a Boxed Set show. Dead Zone is more BS because it actually has a sci-fi element of Johnny touching people and having "visions". Allison is just your average, run of the mill psychic.

Well, since it's been on for at least a couple of seasons and has never come up in Boxed Set (that I remember), I wouldn't think Medium would be a Boxed Set show.

From Boxed Set, March 2008

So, we talk Jericho here?

I think here works. Post-apocalypse = sf, anyway.

Why? I mean, I'd assumed Jericho was sf, but I can't support it with an actual argument. Did the nuclear bomb going off in 24 move it into sf status? If NY isn't destroyed (bear in mind I'm not up to date--so maybe it has been since) is it an apocalypse?

Jericho has an SF premise, but I don't consider it to be an SF show because the episodic plots are straight drama. And yeah, unless they've established that the rest of the world went away, some US cities getting nuked doesn't equal post-apocalyptic to me.

From Boxed Set, June 2008

Venture Brothers here or in comedy?

I've seen discussion in Comedy, so probably best to continue it there.

We used to discuss VB in here, I thought. I've never been in Comedy.

Last season some people discussed Venture Brothers in Natter. Some discussed it in Boxed Set. Some discussed it in both places. Some probably discussed it in other threads that I don't read.

(I was too lazy to get names & links, but just so it doesn't look like I'm citing myself, the last posts on Jericho & Venture Brothers are both me. 'Cause that's why I remembered the conversations.)

"Fuck Western ideologically-motivated gender identification!" Sulu gasped, and came.

t incapable of shutting up

Strega, did you notice the change you made from the line you quoted about SFF and your own statement about SF? Because from a quick Google, whilst I'd agree that Cupid doesn't look at all like Science Fiction, I'd certainly say it falls within the SFF genre, if it's about an Ancient Greek god being made mortal and whacky highjinks ensuing. That's fantasy, surely, and thus within the scope of SFF? Or what would you call it, if not fantasy?

omnis, pursue. That's an order from a shy woman who can use M-16. - Shir

I didn't realize Natter was a TV discussion zone. I thought Natter was, well, natter. My mistake. But I'll get on the bus that says, that one moves way too fast, and has way too much other talk, to try and follow talk about a show. Do I want to propose eliminating TV talk from there? NO! It's not for me to say, and I don't feel strongly enough to even suggest.

I confess, I do not follow in the bucket threads, because, often with work, I'm too far behind, and don't want to be spoiled. I'm 2 weeks behind in Dollhouse, and 200 posts or so in Jossverse, as that is the only one I do subscribe to.

That said, I think the problem isn't *having* the bucket threads. But more, determining what show goes where, and making an announcement that lets folks know. When the final wording for the vote happens, might I suggest something worded along the lines of "and to announce show "x" is being discussed in ____."

Maybe it's just me. I don't read that many threads to know where to look to discuss stuff. But making an announcement might reduce that confusion for all. Who makes that determination and when? Well. Not a clue.

As for whitefont on the iPhone. Ita & team made it so you can adjust what spoiler font color is. I use a pale yellow. I can zoom in to read it on the iPhone, or just scroll past not quite able to read it. Problem solved.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

if it's about an Ancient Greek god being made mortal and whacky highjinks ensuing.

My understanding is that he claims to be an ancient Greek god, but it's equally if not more likely that he's a delusional mental patient. (Hence the reason his love interest is also his psychiatrist.)

[eta: Was Joan of Arcadia discussed in BS? I honestly can't remember. If it was, Cupid probably belongs there too.]

Kristen - Apr 09, 2009 10:10:00 am PDT #9098 of 10289

I look at Cupid like a Wonderfalls. And, had there not been a Minearverse, it never would have occurred to me to look in Boxed Set for the Wonderfalls discussion. I understand the reasoning now but those shows (like Ally McBeal or Eli Stone) don't feel SciFi -- or even SyFy (HA!) -- to me.

Hilariously, a quick Nilly for JoA discussion leads here:

like Ally McBeal

Ha! I was thinking about where that one would have gone out on the porch a while ago. But I decided it was her own psychoses at play. Is that what Eli Stone is like, too?

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

Just as a datapoint, Kings isn't just AU; there are fantasy elements in it, crown of butterflies, smoke blowing against the wind. I mean, there's evidently an extant and functioning "God" character who does stuff and directs people.

I realize that this makes me, one of the board's putative Christians, positing the verifiable existence of God in a show as classifying it as fantasy, but I'm willing to roll with the irony.

But really, it seems pretty clear as an "F" in SFF to me.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

And back on the larger point, I think it's worthwhile to go through the exercise of thinking through how we use things periodically, as we do. I hope we can keep tempers on a even keel as clearly we use things and perceive things differently, but primarily I hope we're still a community that cares about each other and wants to talk to each other about awesome stuff. So we'll shape how we do that, and that's a good thing.
