Voting Discussion: We're Screwing In Light Bulbs AIFG!
We open it up, we talks the talk, we votes, we shuts it down. This thread is to free up Bureaucracy for daily details as we hammer out the Big Issues towards a vote. Open only when a proposal has been made and seconded according to Buffista policy (Which we voted on!). If this thread is closed, hie thee to Bureaucracy instead!
you go over to Natter and say, "Is The Office a big show in NetCom? I want to talk about Saturday Night Live, but I want to avoid Office talk."
That works the first time. Do you ask that question every time before you go in? Do Office people feel they should stay mum while you're in there? Do the Office people start talking and you get spoiled when you go in to follow up on your SNL discussion?
I agree with Kat that there seems to be pressure to make this site a TV site. I neither like nor get it, myself.
It's looked to me for a while now that b.org just goes towards the bucket threads and that those of us for whom they don't work are just out of luck on this board.
The thing about this is it seems to me like the bucket thread is a compromise started to appease people who don't want more TV threads, so there will be fewer threads. I think some people are OK with the compromise and the bucket threads, but those aren't the people who don't want more TV threads. And the big bucket thread simply does not work for a lot of people.
I am not sure of the solution.

But, if you don't keep up in Natter and/or discuss it there, then aren't you out of luck anyway? Regardless of whether a bucket thread is created or nor?
i'll admit that i'm someone who primarily comes here for the TV discussion. mostly because i enjoy reading what people here have to say about it because it's usually more indepth than "squee!!!1!1!", "______ is HAWT!" etc. i don't really have time to keep up in places like Natter or Bitches, but i do pop in and lurk occasionally. i probably post in both of those places about once a year. i get that a lot of you come here to post/read about each other's days or sharing work stories or whatever, but i have livejournal for that. not everyone uses the board for the same reasons, we've definitely established that.
I guess i'm not getting the animosity about having TV threads. if people want to talk about TV in Natter and that works for them, no one's trying to take that away from you. but for the majority of us, that just doesn't work because by the time we have time to sift through the thread, the discussion is hundreds of posts back and/or we wouldn't be able to keep up to see replies to us.
unfortunately, i have to get back to work now. i hope i've clearly expressed why i like the bucket threads for TV.
Tiggy, part of what does not work is the lack of whitefont. I hate being spoiled for things I haven't seen. Bucket threads mean that I can never use them because not only am I time shifted by Tivo, i'm also timeshifted by timezones.
Oddly, I think a single thread for every fucking tv show is a much more honest approach. But of course that means you have the 6 people who watch the show discussing which, I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, but doesn't necessarily lead to a lot of great discussion. Or could be just as easily handled by things like LJ also.

Pretty much. I discuss a little bit of TV here, but not really anything of note anymore.
I tend to be around in Bitches when I can keep up, F2F, Technology, and occasionally other threads when they aren't getting hit with high message counts.
A lot of us do like to talk about tv, for sure. I mean, that's kind of how we got here. But it's far from a dominant discussion in Natter or Bitches, and hasn't been for years. And if there were no tv discussion even allowed, I'd still be here every day.
But I like talking about tv, and I like talking about it with the people here. Outside of the everything goes of Natter and Bitches, we also talk about movies. Comics. Music. Computers. Books. TV is harder to grapple with because it does create problems of volume and breadth - so many shows, so many different viewing patterns. So it's no surprise to me that it takes up more room and causes more angst. But to say we are (or are becoming) all about tv is way off, to my eyes.
I'm here for Bitches, Natter, and Minearverse primarily. I wish I could talk about the Boxed Set shows with my friends here, but since I'm one of the ones who can't keep up, that is what it is. But I'm here for the people, mainly.

Honestly, I don't think that most people who are advocating for TV threads are doing so because they want to make it more of a TV board. I think that we come here because we care about each other. We already value the people here and have been talking about TV with each other for a long time, after all. IMO, the debate isn't really whether or not we should talk TV (because hello, Buffistas), but how that discussion should happen.
As for me, I'll keep on posting in the non-TV threads and loving this community regardless of the outcome of the bucket/no bucket debate.
I think brenda says is pretty much how I feel about things. I think the current shaking out of TV threads is a part of the continuing "where do we go from here?" process post-Buffyverse. It took longer to build steam than I had expected (I thought this might have gotten hashed out a year or two ago, but it never really did), but I think that's what's happening.
I'm here because of natter and to me it seems like a critical mass of tv threads directly bleeds natter. I don't expect this board to be all things to me that I like discussing. Even if I could identify three or four people who were into the exact same thing as me, I wouldn't want that thread.
This may not be helpful at all, but would it help people to have a better search function for threads? If possible?
