I also can't really articulate my personal distaste for the idea, but it has something to do with this being a community and not a made-to-order piece of technology.
But as Jesse's saying, it's probably not even practical.

Ok, I volunteer to do it. I've got plenty of experience with PHP, plus time and the inclination to do the work.

It shouldn't. Essentially you're just creating virtual threads and the functionality would be no different than "real" threads.
