Seems to me, Tim's a Buffista and he does good work, and lots of Buffistas want to talk about it. Rather than a general alum thread, or trying to control what, particularly, is posted in the thread, wouldn't it be perfectly okay to have a Tim thread, but also, if there is any downtime or the conversation rolls that way, talk about other alum stuff in there if someone wants to? I'm not really seeing the problem with this thread idea as long as the bandwidth will support its existence.
Voting Discussion: We're Screwing In Light Bulbs AIFG!
We open it up, we talks the talk, we votes, we shuts it down. This thread is to free up Bureaucracy for daily details as we hammer out the Big Issues towards a vote. Open only when a proposal has been made and seconded according to Buffista policy (Which we voted on!). If this thread is closed, hie thee to Bureaucracy instead!
didn't many of the threads get created because conversation on certain topics seemed to merit their own thread? I admit to not reading every post on this board, but I haven't seen overwhelming discussion about Tim, beagles or Wonderfalls on Natter or on the show threads and other than the virtuous idea of giving props to a Buffista and a creative genius, is a thread really necessary at this time?
This is also one of my problems, Wolf, and it's why I would rather we started an alum thread and broke out Tim if necessary. But it seems like the current proposal is to honor Tim now.
(I'm all for cleaning up the BtVS threads. Shouldn't the Firefly threads wait 'til the UnAms are done with them?)
Where are Unamericans wrt Buffy 7?
Not sure, but OZ just saw Salvage for AtS. Can't remember the last BtVS.
So ... delay the thread ... Wonderfalls, after all, is part of the impetus. If he hadn't left Angel, his stuff would have mostly just fallen in there.
But I, for one, know I'm going to want to talk about Wonderfalls, and it seemed reasonable to me to assume I wouldn't be the only one. If there is demand, there will be volume.
It's just that there's no Wonderfalls yet.
On my own, I don't see the point of a Tim thread
On my own, I don't see the point of Bitches, Sang Sacre, Spoilers Light, and the Music and Movies threads. I don't post there.
And yet, there they are.
The thing is, Tim works on lots of projects. He was, until recently, writing the screenplay for Artemis Fowl (and is not, anymore).
Tim's a busy bee, and I'm betting that in the coming years, there will be lots to talk about in regards to our Tim.
As for the contention that it would be very sad if there were few posts in the thread, I worry not. Angel will become stagnant over the Summer, as is the way during hiatus, and that's not a dishonor to the show.
Also, see the Scotch tape analogy.
Furthermore, the way a new thread starts is that the first two hundred posts are number slutting and claiming the love of New Thread Smell, and then someone will bring something up that's thread related (for example, Tim's X-Files ep, "Mind's Eye") and the discussion will turn to whether rottweillers would make adequate seeing eye dogs for the next 150 posts, and then we'll be waxing poetic about hot dogs for the next 80 posts, which will then turn into porn, before the conversation goes back to Tim.
This is the Buffista Way. We're off-topic a goodly amount of time, in all the threads.
How often is Spike's Bitches really about Spike? It's more about the Bitches, themselves.
Sometimes the conversation will be about Tim's works, sometimes it will be centered on the fans of Tim's works. Each thread has a subcommunity within. I think some folks are of the TWoP mind on this. We don't work that way. Firefly became the defacto Miracles thread for example. That wasn't really a Big.
There's a lot to discuss in terms of Tim's work. I believe he has become as prolific an entity as Joss, at least from where I'm standing, and he's a young man with oodles of talent and a lot on the table. He's very much worthy of his own thread, hence the proposal.
I'm not saying that people can help being unclear, just that there's a big, unavoidable gray area between "Tim posts here and he's a cool guy" and "Tim is a great writer and director, perhaps the best ever to work for ME". I'm entirely comfortable with a thread created based on the latter opinion, and I'm entirely uncomfortable with a thread created based on the former.
It seems to me that you're saying you want the thread, but only if other people want it for the same reasons you do, which I feel is a bit unfair.
IMO, if we're all agreed on the "what" of a Tim thread (that it would be a thread dedicated to the discussion of Tim Minear's work in film and television), the "why" is irrelevant.
