I'm frustrated about a work situation. There's a deaf student in one of my calculus classes, who has ASL interpreters. After several weeks of class, it's pretty obvious to both me and the student that at least one of the interpreters really doesn't have the math knowledge to be able to interpret calculus in a way that makes any sense. There are some other interpreters who are a lot better who the student has been scheduling for when I meet with her for office hours (we've been meeting about two hours a week outside the regular class time), but those interpreters are outside contractors who don't work for the university. The regular interpreters for classes are the ones who work for the university, and even with my fairly limited ASL skills, I can tell that one of them is often just directly signing the exact words that I'm saying, without any sense of what they mean, and the student has said the same thing. I've offered several times to meet with the interpreters before class if they have any questions on any of the material that we'll be covering in class, to make sure that they're conveying the meaning, but they've never taken me up on it. This whole situation isn't fair to this student, or to the other students in class (who are losing a lot of class time while the interpreters try to rephrase things ten times), or to me, and we're all just getting frustrated about all of it.

Cindy, I'm so sorry. The internet tells me that it's very treatable and possibly curable, so I'm going to pin all my hopes to your nephew getting excellent treatment and being cured.

In a plate-of-shrimp, my DH found our copy of the paper cookbook yesterday.

That sounds very frustrating, Hil. I had never thought about that aspect. Is math an area of concentration for the student or does she just need to get through a couple courses? If it is going to be a focus in her degree then a better interpreter solution will be crucial.

Back to work with me. Yikes, so much to do this week. Truly insane amounts. I need to take some time off after this week is over.

Scrambled eggs: The recent Mars news just makes me wish I had selected a different career path. When I was getting my Accounting degree every single elective I took was Science because it was more fun than the business courses. Chemistry, Physics, even Biology. I figured since I was getting a BS it should have some science stuff. Oh well, I also think I should have been a heavy equipment operator when I grew up because I envy the girls running the cranes and stuff when I pass construction sites. I may just have other career envy in general.

Do you have a School or department specific ADA coordinator as well as the University level one? At the School of Nursing, ours works with the university level to get interpreters who are better at nursing/science content for us. Of course, they also read the lectures ahead of time and ask questions, which it sounds like this one isn't doing...
