Punishingly Intricate

Not selfish at all, Nilly. Please let us know how you are whenever you have a chance. And thank you again to Shir for her updates.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

Exactly. You guys being safe is our primary concern. Catching up on Natter (or not) can wait until the world's not going crazy!

Indeed. What they said.

"And that's why God Almighty gave us fire insurance and the public defender".

I wanted to come here with some good news today, because with all of the truly awful things around there are amazing stories of bravery, heroism and solidarity. After being ashamed in my country for years, I'm a bit more proud to be Israeli (and I want it to be clear that I'm including non Jews and residents and just anyone who is here and not trying to murder someone else. Human beings, just human beings). The ways people here support one another are nothing short of amazing, and it's deeply painful and disheartening to realize how many of these roles should have been done by the non-functioning government. The levels of anger at the government are unprecedented. And rightly so.

So here's a video of one of the security gaurds who saved many of his kibbutz, and their response when the met him (they all evacuated to a hotel. Only three were killed): [link]

And there were some other good things that I wanted to share, but today the news started a get closer. A friend's father is missing (that is, he's either dead or kidnapped). And a wonderful, beautiful classmate from my MA was killed in combat. The worst part is to know that this just begun, and not all of the dead have been identified yet. There will be more that I know. That I knew.

Over 1,200 dead, and this is not the end yet.

Because books.

Oh Shir, I'm so sorry. And please believe we're all truly grateful whenever you or Nilly have time to update us -- it's amazing that you can do that, and all we want is for everyone to be safe in the midst of the horror.

Our wings are not tired.

Thank you for the reminder that there are still a huge number of human beings who don't want to murder each other. It is hard to remember when the news is filled with so much horror.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

So glad to see you here, Nilly.

That's what it was like in NYC after the 9/11 attacks. 2,600 people died in a city of millions, but seemingly everyone knew someone who died, or whose family was affected.

Thanks for the updates, Shir, and signs of hope.
