I'm sorry your dad is having a rough time of it, Steph, but it sounds 100% reasonable to me that you are going on your vacation and, yeah, the hospital with professionals is where he needs to be... and where he is. Oh no, I very much need external validation, because I feel like the most neglectful of adult children, going to the beach while her crazy parent languishes in the looney bin. (I do get that that perspective is messed up, which is why I'm still in therapy.) (Also, my brother the therapist wants it noted for the record that the reason I have that perspective is because Dad installed it in me when I was 12, which is true.)

The beach, but South Carolina this time, instead of North Carolina. Folly Beach, near Charleston. (It's oddly a shorter drive timewise to South Carolina than it is to North Carolina [10 hours vs 12 hours]. I assume it's just a straighter shot to Folly Beach from here than it is to Topsail.)

Folly Beach is wonderful. My brother and his ex lived there for several years.. in fact they were living there when E was born. The first time I saw E was in the Harris Teeter...I think that's the tight grocery store. I was so exited and mom saw my brother's car in the grocery parking lot so we pulled in and tracked them down. And bro was carrying E in his baby Bjorn thingie and E was...well not tiny...but he was adorable.

Steph I also want to say that you need this trip and go on it. There isn't anything you can do for your Dad right now . This is also a "put your oxygen mask on first" situation....right now you are the priority because you can't do anything if you can't breathe. A lot of stressful stuff had already happened so you need to get your oxygen mask on and breathe and be ready for what comes next.
