My first MIL actually told my mother quite sincerely on the night before we got married that I was clearly getting the better deal by getting her awesome son in the marriage. My mother was amazingly diplomatic and gently stirred the conversation in another direction. She was a piece of work.

I never knew you've had to deal with this terrible person all these years--how much more amazing that she's even partly responsible for the existence of a gem of a man like TCG. I am so, so sorry.
