We watched Eternals last night, and I liked it, but there was too much movie in that movie (we paused it to get more pizza right at the beginning of the Hiroshima flashback, and I was sure that there was maybe 30 minutes left to go, and there was still an hour and 15 minutes to go). Really gorgeous movie, though.
Kingo reminded me that I *still* haven't watched The Big Sick. I need to do that.
We watched Shang Chi the other night. I can see why everybody focused on the big bus fight because that was by far the most interesting and original part of the movie.
The rest of it was so ridiculously trope-y Matilda just kept calling out bits as they occurred: Harry Potter! Lord of the Rings! Miyazaki! Black Panther!
Can't complain about seeing Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung flashing their star power though.
Awkwafina is turning into the special sauce of Disney/Marvel studio. She's good at it!

Right? Although I did also really like Simu Liu and Awkwafina, too.

Agreed.
I'm still a little freaked out that
I watched it the same day that the Hunga Tonga/Hunga Haʻapai volcano erupted.
We started Eternals, and I got tired of the fighty fighty zappy zappy too quickly for any of the characters to interest me. I am just not interested in big setpiece fights any more.
We did enjoy Shang Chi- the characters got me interested almost immediately. I loved all of the actors, and they looked like they were enjoying themselves. (Also, it was fun to see all of the SF scenes.)

That was a lot. My hot take is I like the characters, not sure about the story. Real curious about
Jon Snow’s complicated family history
[heh, typecasting]
I would love to see a director's cut where it's just the scenes Chloe Zhao actually directed (so just the scenes were characters quietly talk about their feelings and none of the fight scenes I have to assume she handed off to one of the in-house Marvel 2nd-unit laser show directors).
I have to admit that I really loved the Eternals fight scene between Makkari and Ikarus, and Phastos and Ikarus, because Ikarus deserved to get his ass beaten SO HARD.
I don't think I will ever be able to spell these names without looking at IMDB or some other reference. All I can remember is not like I think it should be spelled"
OK can one of you remind me or explain why Ikarus left 100 years ago or whenever it was? I found his arc very confusing. Nice ending, though.
My big takeaway, honestly, is that
Celestials are bad at programming
explain why Ikarus left 100 years ago
I think it was because
he knew the Emergence was (relatively) nigh, and if he stayed around Sersi he wouldn't be able to keep from revealing what he knew about it to her.
Which he did in the end, anyway, so
extra heartache and resentment and anger for all.
