I couldn't believe it the first twenty times you told us, but it's starting to sink in now.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

What if they gave you consent before they shifted into their non-sentient form?

Good question! Someone write Ann Landers.

Also, what if the species is sentient but they don't believe in free will, so "consent" is meaningless for them?

Friends don't let friends read "Atlas Shrugged"

It seems part of the reason bestiality is considered immoral is that animals can't consent to sex with humans. Which is obviously not an issue with a sentient, consenting dolphin.

Drowning, however, is.

You were a wrong baby who grew up wrong. The wrong kind of wrong. It's better you hear it from a friend.

Dolphins are sentient. I think you mean sapient. (Or maybe consentient.)

Pssst, billytea thinks doll bins are salient. Pass it on...

Incidentally, my brother once sent me, for reasons best known to himself, a how-to guide on seducing a dolphin.

I've heard stories that, in the swim with the dolphins features at water parks and such, there have been problems with male dolphins, shall we say, putting the moves on the human swimmers.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Oh good lord -- I just had a flashback of a story I've read about that, and the resulting child.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I go grey for 12 hours and I come back to seducing dolphins? This is why I can't have a job that keeps me off the interwebs.

A dress should be tight enough to show you're a woman but loose enough to flee from zombies. — Ginger

Consent before shifting...I dunno, depends on worldview. Sometimes, the human self or soul and the animal self are clearly two separate entities, and in some 'verses, they are not.

I think, even if the human part gave consent, if the animal part was frightening or unwilling, it would be...rape. I dunno. Rapiality? Beastirape? Hmmm.

But if the animal part were participatory, then it would be consensual, if fuzzy, sex.

Huh. I'm just going to say it's safer, all the way around, to avoid sex altogether with shifted shapeshifters.

Other non-human sentient creatures, well, I guess let you tentacled, disembodied, multilegged, slimy, dry, rocklike, whatever freak flag fly.

And now I have to dogsit. And feel vaguely guilty.
