I don't know what they've retconned but originally Black Widow was a soviet agent and Hawkeye was a criminal (jewel thief type). I'm getting the sense that both of them were recruited then trained by Shield in this series.
Up until the punching, it was a real nice party.

He rarely headlined his own title. He's mostly a character in The Avengers and periodically a guest on things like Daredevil.
