So I need a song to complete a playlist version of an old compilation tape I made about 20 years ago. It's Michelle Shocked's cover of the Beatles' "Lovely Rita". This was originally released on NME's
Sgt Pepper Knew My Father
LP in '88. This album is long out of print, and it seems was never released on CD.
The song was also on the extended reissued version of Michelle Shocked's
Short Sharp Shocked.
This album (and CD) are also out of print, with new copies going for $109 on Amazon and used copies staring at $26.99.
So anyone have either of these albums and can rip the song for me? Pretty please?
Michelle's version is one of my favorite covers ever, and probably my favorite Beatles cover.
I wonder if Jon has it.
You can get it on vinyl.
The few links I found on music blogs had all been taken down.
Ooh, there was a promo CD of the Knew My Father album. One's available for $40.
I think I've only heard the entire album a few times. For some reason I was thinking Tom Waits was on it. Perhaps I'm thinking of a Disney tribute album that Tom did a song for?
I don't remember what any of the other tracks sound like.
Anyway, I'd prefer CD, but I'm planning on buying a USB turntable one of these days....
I have it on vinyl.
But I also found a download link that works. Tom -- I'll email you the mp3. Profile addy ok?
In answer to the Prince song, I would probably say "when doves cry." I think it is representative of his sound, use of the full band and complexity of arrangement. The chords in that song alone are awesome and the song leads very well into what his 90s sound would become.
I love Stevie Nicks anecdote about "Little Red Corvette" and how she heard "Stand Back" in the downbeat of Prince's song.
Thanks again, Jon!
"Lovely Rita" is as lovely as I remember. But, horror of horros, I did have to manually edit the mp3 tags. Now that's a first-world problem if ever there was one.

I hate that too! (but agreed on the first-worldedness)
OK, after listening to the album for the first time in 24-ish years, I can say that Michelle Shocked's "Lovely Rita" is the standout track. The other songs vary from "meh" to "interesting." (Although The Fall's cover of "A Day in the Life" is good.) Even Sonic Youth's version of "Within You Without You" is a pretty straightforward cover.
