In answer to the Prince song, I would probably say "when doves cry." I think it is representative of his sound, use of the full band and complexity of arrangement. The chords in that song alone are awesome and the song leads very well into what his 90s sound would become.
I love Stevie Nicks anecdote about "Little Red Corvette" and how she heard "Stand Back" in the downbeat of Prince's song.
Thanks again, Jon!
"Lovely Rita" is as lovely as I remember. But, horror of horros, I did have to manually edit the mp3 tags. Now that's a first-world problem if ever there was one.

I hate that too! (but agreed on the first-worldedness)
OK, after listening to the album for the first time in 24-ish years, I can say that Michelle Shocked's "Lovely Rita" is the standout track. The other songs vary from "meh" to "interesting." (Although The Fall's cover of "A Day in the Life" is good.) Even Sonic Youth's version of "Within You Without You" is a pretty straightforward cover.
No, the Madonna song has to be danceable and should court controversy. I'll pass over "Like a Virgin" and "Like a Prayer" to pick "Papa Don't Preach."
Madonna is a tough one, too many options. Looking at number ones alone, we have "Like A Virgin", "Crazy For You", "Into The Groove", "Papa Don't Preach" and "Like A Prayer".
I narrowed it down to the Likes, and finally went with "Like A Prayer". I'll really need to pull up the video for a full accounting, though.

Can you put it up on Buffistarawk?
Instantly goes into my new covers mix (mostly melancholy) alongside:
Up to My Neck In You - Mark Kozelek (orig. AC/DC)
Vapour Trail - Trespassers William (Ride)
Satisfaction - Cat Power (Stones)
State Trooper - Cowboy Junkies (Bruce!)
I Won't Share You - Mourning Benders (Smiths)
I Know Very Well - Colin Meloy (Morrissey)
Waiting For a Superman - Iron and Wine (Flaming Lips)
Needle of Death - Lisa Miller (Bert Jansch)
You Tore Me Down - Yo La Tengo (Flamin' Groovies)
I'll Be Your Mirror - Rainy Day (VU)
I feel like Like a Prayer is Madonna's best song by a long shot.

That's a cool mix. Are you going to post it to Buffistarawk?
I love Cat Power's cover of "Satisfaction". My favorite cover of that song, slightly ahead of the Bjork/P J Harvey live version.
