Thrive to spite them

I skipped a bunch to say that I am making an epic attempt to finally get caught up.

I just started S4, have been introduced to Castiel and I'm rather glad I'm sick and staying home because I'm watching S4 until I get sick. And then I'll take a break and watch some more.

Just from hearing about heaven and hell and angels I wasn't really sold on the idea, but the S4 premiere has me sold. And I'm not sure I like the new Ruby, I kinda liked the old Ruby. I rather liked how the actress portrayed Lilith. I maybe in the minority about that.

Art Crawl!!!

Should we be afraid? Misha Collins will be tweeting during the season finale.

And a brief interview with Richard Speight.

askye, I'm so glad you're catching up!

And yeah, there was sort of a divide between fans of "old Ruby" and "new Ruby."

Apparently Jared really liked New Ruby. To quote Jensen, "Hyuh, I'm gonna marry that."

There was something about the way the first Ruby actress handled herself that I liked, granted I haven't seen much of the new Ruby, but there was something about her I liked.

I've finally met Castiel -- he's intense and has that voice. I've watched through Yellow Fever now.

Sam and Dean being opposite sides is not going to be good for them.

Mary was a hunter and so was her family. Omigod I'd love to see an alternate universe thing where John makes the deal and dies and Mary has to go back to hunting and that life. Talk about angst but also interesting because I don't believe she would have kept Sam in the dark for as long as John did.

Also is it ever said that John knew that Mary & her family were hunters?

Yellow Fever had me conflicted. On the one hand Jensen Ackles was freaking hysterical. The whole "I'll man the flashlight" and screaming at the cat and worrying about having fake ids, just really funny.

On the other hand the actual plot line of the ghost kinda pushed some buttons. It wasn't the guy's fault, I mean okay he was infecting people as a ghost, but he was scared and abused and the way he died. I had to fast forward when they were scaring him to death because it just felt too cruel.

Although the little girl is really creepy as Lilith.

Yeah, Yellow Fever was a big issues squick for a lot of people. But then on airing we got the whole "Eye of the Tiger" thing, which was distracting.

As far as I know, Mary never told John her family were hunters. I'm not entirely sure he learned about it until he started finding out things about Sam. And canon's still iffy on that. John tells his kids for the first time "It's a demon" that killed Mary in a phone conversation in, um, Scarecrow? Season one, anyway. Grey canon has it that one reason he pitched such a fit about Sam going away to school was that he already knew something had Sam marked, and he was afraid for Sam to be away from his protection. But once Sam left, John hoped he would escape the notice of whatever was stalking him.

We know now (in S5!) that was a failed hope. But I'm pretty sure in finding out that Sam was marked, John learned that Mary and her family had been hunters. Going after the colt he probably learned about the Campbells, and I have no idea how long it took to connect the hunter Campbells with his deceased inlaws.

Room for speculation--and fic! And of course, further revelation in canon.

Yeah the Eye of the Tiger at the end was defintily distracting.

If I watch it again I'll probably just skip over the end part.

I can see John finding out about Mary and her family, but i guess it's just speculation. And some hunter must have clued him in.

You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

some hunter must have clued him in.

I agree. He never shared anything with the boys he didn't feel they absolutely had to know so I can see him knowing about Mary and not telling.

I am the fly who dreams of the spider

Last night I was having malformed thoughts of self-worth and self-sacrifice and how the Winchester's have constantly been holding each others lives in higher esteem than their own, and the vicious cycle of self-sacrifice. Which naturally got me to thinking of Charlie Crews and his own epiphany when he traded his life for Dani Reese's. I don't know that it maps onto the stories being told in Supernatural, but I wonder if the idea of realizing that saving your friend/loved one at the price of denying them you wasn't enough, that you were still hurting them. So what do you do? Accept nothing less than bringing yourself back to them, realizing that self-sacrifice isn't the answer, it's just another part of the problem. Valuing yourself and accepting that you are loved and needed and worthwhile.

I don't know if that knowledge of self-worth will or should come to Dean this season, or how that could fit in with the stakes of the Apocalypse, but, there it is...
