But so is Sam -- angels DO exist, and there are things that the boys can't necessarily see but are still out there. (And I loved Sam's joy on behalf of Dean in the episode where he found out that Dean had been contacted by an angel.)

The command to "rest" has a lot more weight given what happens with Dean later in S2.
So Dean stopped Sam from killing the bad guy, but during the car chase he got killed anyway, and Dean interprets that as something almost holy?
