I tried to read some Sam+Dean schmoop the other day, and I just couldn't handle it. I'm not sure if I changed, or if the show changed. I can't take Dean/Cas schmoop either, but I never could. I know I used to like brotherly schmaltz. But these stories had them being adorably daft about being platonic lifemates and soulmates in heaven, and it was just off. I mean, they seemed well-written, but just wrong. I wonder if it's the soulless start to season 6 that's put me in this place.

I still need them together at the end of the series though, and hopefully single (or Dean with Cas, at best, so, yeah, that's gonna happen) living TOGETHER. So it's not like I approve of any schism between them. They're still my platonic OTP. I just don't get the sugar.

britomart_is is a fantastic writer. She blows me away almost every time. And yeah, if I remember right, "Dictionary For a Dead Language" was incredible.

I read one a while back where they were actually elderly, nearing eighty, and living in Key West. It was *almost* too much, except for those realistic details (creaky joints, sleepiness, cholesterol problems) that made it just right. It was more Grumpy Old Men than anything else, and really just sweet enough.

I think my problem with one of them was that it was reaching quite clearly into prime dysfunction that we don't see on the show--Sam was shown being jealous of time Dean spent with Cas. If you're not writing twu wuv Wincest, that doesn't sit right with me. And, well, I'm not going to read the Wincest, am I?

Of course, Dean wasn't spending spending time with Cas. He was just working out a soulmates deal and making plans so that him and Sam would die at the same time. That's why he looked so happy.

I'm fully on the train that they're the most important people in each other's lives, and even that it might break them for meaningful relationships with other people (cf canon). But that was a bit much.

When I imagine them way in the future, post-series, I like to think of them training other hunters. That's usually as far as I go without subsiding into really gooey schmoop.

Although I did once fiddle with story in which they had bought a Christmas tree farm (an injury to Dean's leg prevented further hunting), and Sam was writing successful novels a la Stephen King, and they were raising the orphaned daughter of a vampire victim. See what I mean?

Why do people keep injuring Dean?

Seriously. I can't remember one story with Sam with a permanent injury that impairs him hunting, and tons of ones where Dean gets fucked up.

Christmas tree farm is delightfully random. I like it.

In my head he doesn't stop hunting unless he's forced to, and I think that might be why he gets injured so often in fic. Sorry?

Before S6 started, I was working on a post-Swan Song story where Sam came back from hell blind, though! Um, whoo?

I guess Sam gets a wife and kid and/or goes back to school fairly often, but you have to cripple Dean to keep him down. Yet? He got a woman and a kid and stopped hunting for a year.

Still, it squicks me. There's one chick, roque_clasique, who has a veritable fetish for it. Her smoking!Dean fetish? I totally get, though. I kinda wish they'd kept that from the original pilot.

If you want to put Cas in perspective.

fanon love: Jimmy. I don't know if this really counts.

He's so rich in fiction, and I feel his absence in canon. He's so fucking tragic in fanon. I love it when fic takes the time to show him back in his old life After. I love it when he shares his vessel with Cas and they argue. I love it when fanon acknowledges that he died and Doesn't That Suck?

But after humanizing him in The Rapture, in the rest of canon Jimmy is just a meatsuit to be forgotten. And I don't know if I would have reached that point of bitterness without fic pointing out the rife potential. Jimmy is lumped callously with all the other meatsuits ridden by demons, killed and dismissed with nary an eyelash batted or a speck of remorse for the human life lost.
