I blame craisins. Which are not nearly as yummy as currants. And I say that as a pro-cranberry person.
Jesse -- yep, it was actually Flavor-Aid, but everybody thinks it was Kool-Aid anyway and I'm not even sure if F-A is still in business....
I would think the connotations might have forced them to change the brand name, if nothing else.

That reminds me of earlier this year when one of the local supermarkets had put up new signs in the freezer department that read stuff like "breakfast!", "novelties!" and "potatos!" and over in one corner was "hispanics!"
I noticed the next time I went through that last one had gone away....
Currants, like muscat raisins and other baking-centric dried foods, have become a hard-to-find niche item. It's frustrating (currants are easier to find than muscats, which are essentially unfindable unless you have a source to order baking bulks of them) during fruitcake season.
