a Rotary Exchange year on SaltSpring Island, BC,
So Fay you have been traveling around for and with school for a long time. That's really cool.
Kat, I work about 2 blocks away from the Oakland Convention Center, near the Lake Merritt BART station. I've got a group dinner organized tomorrow night for Rockridge, alas, but I'm free to tour guide drive you around Oakland/Berkeley at lunch on Tuesday.
On Wed., find/make time to go over to the Oakland Museum to walk around the grounds inside the complex. It's beautiful, an architectural treasure of the Bay Area. When you find the koi pond, go left between the pond and the building until you see the passageway to the gardens, then stroll around, or just lie on the stone walls and stretch and bask. There's lovely art scattered around on all levels of the gardens, and an historical exhibit of the Gold Rush in the far right-hand corner (if you enter from the koi pond) complete with a sometimes rushing stream. eta: or call me and I'll walk over and show you around over there! either way, it's free. Only the inside exhibits have a fee.
Hi, Perkins! I have been a shamefully antisocial Buffista since moving back to LA and haven't seen anyone, but I am attempting to do better in the back half of 09. I wish I could've let people know I'd be around sooner but all the plans only just came together this morning. But I will probably be working more closely with people in our Oakland office over the next couple of months, so I'm likely to be up that way again soon.
Oh, also thank you for the suggested activities, Java Cat, and for the kind offer to be my Oakland tour guide. If I have time, I will definitely do some perusing of the surroundings. The koi pond sounds like a winner.
oops, I think I read that wrong.
I hope I get to see you on one of your trips!
can't do it this Tuesday, but if you are going to be up more often there is another chance
In case anyone's plans change, P-C and I will be meeting Kat at Le Cheval in downtown Oakland at 6:30. Just send me an email, and I'll add you to the reservation.
I wish I could make it (just received your email, megan), but I have to go pick my dogs up after work tomorrow night and get them some exercise before I drive the 40 miles home and crash. I look forward to meeting Kat on one of her next trips! And I heartily endorse Le Cheval!
Man, I hope Megan Walker shows up this time.
Aw, I've never been to La Cheval, though I hear it's great. Unfortunately, despite the OTC remedies I have been steadily ingesting, I am at tat unfortunate stage when laughter sets off a coughing fit. And if there's one thing I can be sure of, meeting buffistas will be an occasion of laughter.
I hope I get another chance to meet you before too long, kat! Meanwhile, I am very much enjoying your blog.
What a shame--I WAS in Oakland, and I'm leaving out of the Oakland AIRPORT shortly...just missing Kat! :)
