What's funny is that the book's author mentioned that with both recipes, the Havana bartenders would have to alter it for the Americans by using gin instead of rum.

The first time I ever heard of bitters was at a bar up on Washington Island in Door County, WI. The big thing there was to drink a shot of bitters followed by a beer chaser, and then they gave you a card to celebrate your achievement that you then "signed" by putting your thumb in the shotglass and putting your thumbprint on the card with the bitters as the ink.
